Just wondering how many EB multiple mums out there have mirror image twins? My girls are mirror image(one left handed, one right handed) which I was told only happens in approx 4% of ID twins. Apparently this happens when the egg splits very late after fertilization.
( 9 days I think???)

Just curious.

My left handed one finds it much more difficult to do some certain fine motor things, just wondering if it's because shes left handed?

mumofterrortwins,

I have B/G twins so can't help you there but wanted to say that my DH's best mate is a mirror image twin and the similarities are amazing, even still at 40 years of age.

Their voices are identical, their mannerisms the same, everything. I didn't know S had a twin when I first meet him. A few months later I saw him again and started chatting. I could tell he had no idea who I was - "rude pr***," I thought. Eventually he said, "I think you are mistaking me for my twin brother S."

Honestly, it's spooky how similar they are!

Cheers.

My two are ID and one is left handed and one right handed - but I didn't think that alone made them mirror twins as they are otherwise the same eg their hair parts on the same side, cowlicks (that spelling looks weird) are on the same side etc. I'll have to google it now!

Edited to add a defintion I found online - there are a few different ones around, some say the right hand/left hand thing alone, other says mirror image is more than the dominant hand - they mostly say it's about 25% of ID twins:

Mirror Image Twins
About 25% of identical twins are mirror image twins. Their hair falls in opposite directions, they have mirror image fingerprints and if one is right handed, the other is left handed.

I suspect it may be that mirror image twins have different dominant hands (ie left and right handed twins) but not all twins with different dominant hands are mirror image twins.

I wonder how common left and right handed pairs are in general with twins. I have b/g twins and DD is a lefty and DS a righty. Maybe they get it because they are frequently looking at and copying each other?

I have cousins who are mirror image twins, one is left handed the other right handed. We can only tell them apart by the mole on their cheeks, one is on the left the other the right.

It is caused by late splitting of the embryo. It makes me wonder if left handed people I know were at one ppint twins. Weird.

I thought our 2 were mirror twins - one is left handed one is right, they part their hair on the same side though, so now I'm not so sure. I was told it was about 5% if ID twins too.

Cheers

I think my two are mirror image. They do have opposite hair parts but I think they are both righthanded at the moment.

Just saw the topic and had to reply.

I had friends when I was growing up who were exact mirror images. One had her organs on the wrong side, they each had knee trouble (different legs) etc etc - apparently that is very rare. I found it easy to tell them apart though and they didn't sound the same when they talked. I'm not sure about right/left handed.
