Now that Spring seems to be on it's way, I thought it might be a good idea to start this thread.
Tell me your favourite kid friendly playground/park.
This information will be handy for everyone here, especially those new to Canberra and/or new to parenthood.
Cheers,
Helen.

I would have to say that my favourite 2 parks are the Cotter and also Black Mountain although we don't go to either very often. Might have to change that before we leave here.
Thanks

I so needed this thread! I've been wondering where the best kid-friendly parks are.
Found this info on the ACT Government websites:
http://www.environment.act.gov.au/bushpark...ndreserves.html - list of the big nature reserve parks in Canberra.
http://www.parksandplaces.act.gov.au/parks...urbanparks.html - info on major parks in Canberra
http://www.parksandplaces.act.gov.au/parks...regionmaps.html - map showing where parks are
Couldn't find any information on which local parks have good children's playground areas - bummer.
My favourite is Corroboree Park in Ainslie. Apart from being where I got married and used to live opposite, it's got cricket pitch, basketball hoop, tennis courts, playground equipment, community hall, BBQs, lots of trees (some planted in 1925), and the grass is kept green even during drought. Location is great if you're inner north.

I really like the park at the Platypus Centre in Ngunnawal/Amaroo. DD#2 is crawling and the "black stuff" is great for a crawler. I am not a huge fan of tan bark...
Plus my DD's love the bouncey see saw!!

I found some great suggestions (some already mentioned in this thread) in the latest "See Canberra" magazine.
- Adventure Playground, Springbett Street, Kambah
(interesting playground equipment including flying foxes and large treehouses)
- Black Mountain Peninsula, Garryowen Drive, off Lady Denman Drive, Acton
(picnic areas, barbecues, playground equipment and swimming spots)
- Cotter Reserve, Cotter Road, Stromlo
(a popular recreation venue for picnics, swimming and relaxation alongside the Murrumbidgee River; playground equipment)
- Diddams Close Park, Diddams Close, Belconnen
(a park located near Lake Ginninderra in the heart of Belconnen with a swimming area)
- Eddison Town Park, Launceston Street, Phillip
(a park located close to Woden Plaza)
- Fadden Pines, Bugden Avenue, Fadden
(a lovely public park for picnics and walking; playground equipment)
- Glebe Park, Coranderrk Street, Canberra City
(in the summer, the English elms provide welcome shade; includes playground equipment)
- John Knight Memorial Park, Townsend Place, Belconnen
(popular picnic spot beside Lake Ginninderra with playground equipment and water features)
- Point Hut Picnic Area, Point Hut Road, Gordon
(a serene park and pond close to Tuggeranong)
- Tuggeranong Town Park, Anketell Street, Greenway
(a popular skate and public park including playground equipment and lake views)
- Weston Park, Weston Park Road, Yarralumla
(barbecue facilities, playground equipment, large tree houses, miniature railway and maze)
- Yerrabi Ponds, Gundaroo Drive, Amaroo
(a skating park and children's playground near Gungahlin Lakes with undercover barbecues)
Cheers,
Helen.

Our big favourite at the moment is the Yarralumla Park, next to Primary. Has a bit spider web/rope pyramid, swings, fort, seesaw, and a great bakery (good coffees) a walk away at the shops. We usually take the bikes and go down the cycle path to the lake for picnic, feed the swans, and see the police boats. Good park for active 4 y.o boys...it has tanbark.
Another good one is in Curtin, half way around Throssel St. It is new, has a cubby/bridge, slide, swings, and great to walk up the nature strip to the reserve and feed horses. Once again, there's tanbark.
A word of warning about Eddison Park in Woden - watch out for syringes and glass....

Will have to check out that Curtin park!
Do be careful about feeding horses though. Some of those horses may be used for competition, which means they're drug tested and you'd be amazed what that means for their diet. Some horse owners are as careful about what they feed their horses as I am about what I feed my baby, so best to ask first. Horses have very fragile stomachs and can die from a bad case of indigestion or from being too fat, or can have their riding careers ended because of it.

emd: point taken about feeding the horses!

we usually stick to carrots (if we remember to take them...), but will give that a miss altogether and just pat them.
Might see you there someday!
