Good Morning,

Does anyone else out there have a child on the Co-Trimoxazole/Placebo Privent trial for Urinary Tract Infections?

My 2 1/2 yr old DD has been on for 8 months now with no recurrance and she is taking to the medication well, I was just curious to see if anyone else in involved in the trial and what there experiences have been...

Hi,

My daughter is not on the trial, but I am interested in your findings. I have a 4.5 yo DD who quite often has UTI's. She was sent recently to have a renal ultrasound, but they said everything was normal. I have had to emphasise how to wipe yourself after going to the toilet (no. 1 and No. 2's). She used to complain of a sore hip and it worked out to be UTI's. What is the medication? Is it still on trial? Do they need anyone else?

Hi Renee,

Oh they are horrible things aren't they, our poor DD got her's in Dec last year and had a mild rash so we were told by the GP it was a heat rash and she would be fine, 3 days later when she had slept all day everyday I took her to emergency at Calvary where we were initially told it was just a slight temp, I will get onto there incompetance at a later date but the next day after she was transfered to TCH we found out what she had. She was in for a week on the drip and was very sick.

Anyway she also had the renal US and has 13% reduce function in her left kidney.

The trial is of the same drug they currently give kids to treat UTI's. The trial is to basically see how good the drug is at preventative care. Half of the kids are on the antibiotic and the other half are on a placebo, you don't know which until the end. We have been on the trial since Feb and so far no recurrance....

It is run through the Paeds outpatients at TCH, Prof Reynolds runs it. He is really good, the kids see him every 3 mths and DD has another renal US in the next month.

It is being run all over Aust and if you are interested I would give them a call. Another bonus is if your kids get sick they get great care and you don't have to go through too much bother in the Emergency Dept.

I hope this has given you something to go on. TCH is awesome so I would give them a call if you want some more info!

Gee Amanda, that sounds like a familiar story (the first part, that is). My baby also had a UTI, it was Nov last year and took a couple of visits to casualty before they admitted her (then she had a week on a drip).

The normal process from there is to wait 6 weeks from the time the UTI clears up, then run some tests to see if they have kidney reflux. If so, they are eligible for the trial. If the baby doesn't have kidney reflux, they won't benefit from the trial. And kidney reflux is something they normally outgrow by pre-school age anyway, so I doubt they'd put a 4.5yo on it.

Thanks for the clarrification on the trial details!

Yeah you have to love the hospitals! I would recommend on my personal experiences to take kids to TCH emergency over Calvary. The doctors did not keeps us informed and were so rude my DH almost punched our Dr. Not to mention the fact that my family has a history of crappy veins so all drips go in the foot or under the arm (not comfy) and they wouldn't listen and pr*cked Ella for 3 hours before we demanded she be moved to TCH... we were there 20 minutes and the resident had the drip in her foot!!

Anyway I do yamber on a bit.

Hope your baby is doing better now original.gif
