Thanks for this forum! It is so exciting!
Well my name is Sacha and I am in my first year of the Bachelor of Midwifery at ACU in Melbourne. As part of the course, I need to follow through the pregnancies of 30 women in my 3 years of the degree, in order to become a registered midwife. This pretty much involves me (as the student), connecting with pregnant women in the community - and getting to know the women through spending time with them - finding out what's importnant to them and following them up till around 4 weeks after the baby is born. It is a very casual and easy going program, aimed at educating the student and gaining an understanding of how to be a great midwife, whilst offereing the women extra support.
I am located in melbourne, and would love to hear from any interested women in the eastern areas, but I am also willing to travel!
I am fairly young and have not yet had the privilege of having children, but am very passionate and intereseted in the area of midwifery.
If you would love the experience and honour of being followed through your special journey, please PM me and I can tell you more!
Sacha.

Hello!
My name is Annie and I am currently studying for my Graduate Diploma in Midwifery through ACU (Australian Catholic University) in Melbourne. I am based through St Vincent’s Private Hospital in East Melbourne. Part of our course requirements is to partake in a ‘Follow Through Journey’.
I am looking for women (less than 35 weeks pregnant) in the Melbourne area who would allow me to meet up with them at regular intervals during their pregnancy so that I am able to gain an insight into your experience of pregnancy, the birth and the weeks following your birth.
This does not involve anything physical, but rather a chance to chat every few weeks about how you have been going, what your thoughts and fears are and you’re your hopes are about the future. I do not need to be present during the birth if you do not want me to be there.
If you are interested in having a student midwife involved in your journey through your pregnancy, or would like to know more information, please PM me.
Thanks,
Annie

Hi,
my name is Claire and I am undertaking my post grad diploma in Midwifery at Curtin University in Perth. To complete the course I need to "follow" at least one woman through her pregnancy, birth period and post natal period. I don't actually have to be present at the birth if you don't want. The plan would be to meet with you a couple of times during your pregnancy, during labour (if you wished) and then again on a few occasions during the first 6 weeks after birth.
I am doing the practical part of my course at Rockingham hospital so any pregnant ladies down this way would be ideal.
I have 3 children myself, 2 born in the UK and the youngest born in Rockingham hospital last year, so it will be an interesting challenge completing this course.
If anyone feels they would like to partake in this follow through experience or just wants to find out a bit more please feel free to PM me and we can arrange a time to meet up and chat about it.
Thanks for reading
Claire

Hi all you lovely pregnant women out there!
I'm finishing the last 3 months of my Midwifery Degree in Melbourne and I'm desperately searching for women who are due before Feb 09 and not yet past 35 weeks who are willing to catch up and talk with a student about their pregnancy and birth experiences.
The "Follow Through Journey Program" is part of the ACU and Nurses Board of Victoria requirements for midwives in training. It is designed to provide the opportunity for students and women to link together, create a supportive environment and provide an space for continuity.
Because each woman's experience of pregnancy is different, the Follow Through Program is very flexible and is designed to suit each person. Linking up with a student can involve simply catching up for a cuppa and a chat a few times over your pregnancy and afterwards, or students can be there as a more active support at your appointments if that's what a woman is looking for.
As students we learn so much from simply hearing about your experiences. We can't complete our training without your input.
So if you are due before Feb 09, live in Melbourne or out the eastern side of Melbourne, you're not yet past 35weeks pregnant and are simply willing to talk about you and your baby, let me know.
If you can help or want to know more, please message me.
Thanks all!

Hi, my name's Melissa & I am in my 2nd year of the Bachelor of Midwifery at UniSA

Since having my own children, I can now appreciate the difference having a great midwife can make to your pregnancy & birth experience.
In order for me to become the type of midwife I aspire to be, I look forward to being able to join expectant women on their journey through pregnancy, birth & beyond. It is a requirement of my course that I attend a minimum of 2 ante-natal appointments & visit, or have telephone contact, with the woman at least twice in the post-natal period. Also, I would hope to build a professional relationship based on trust & respect with the woman & her family that would enable her to feel comfortable enough for me to attend her labour & birth.
I live in
Adelaide (Salisbury) & would love to hear from anyone who would be interested in finding out more about having a student midwife.
Thanks

Are you having a baby?
Would you consider sharing this special time with a midwifery student?
My name is Jane Ireland. I am a 35 year old wife and mother of three children. I am currently undertaking studies towards a Bachelor of Midwifery at Flinders University.
As part of my tertiary studies, I am required to follow-through 40 women through their experience of pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period under the direction of a registered midwife. I will learn about women during pregnancy, birth and the first few weeks with a new baby.
As part of the follow-through experience, I will develop a one-on-one relationship with you and your family; I will attend your antenatal appointments, support you and contribute to your care during labour and the birthing experience, providing support for you both physically, mentally and spiritually. I have the skills and abilities to advocate for you during labour and birth and can speak out for you when you are unable to.
I have previous experience working in the capacity as a doula and have birthed with couples in both public and private hospitals with Obstetricians and Midwives. I have attended homebirths where women are cared for solely by Independent Midwives. During this time, I have gained extensive experience and knowledge associated with inductions, assisted delivery, natural birth and caesarean section. My doula studies were undertaken with Optimum Birth during 2007.
If you would like to utilise my services in the capacity of midwifery student, assisting me in gaining registration as a midwife, please contact me direct by PM – I would love to hear from you. I live in the inner-metropolitan area and am willing to travel to where you choose to birth your baby. Should you change your mind about having me as your student at any time, your choices and maternity care will not be affected in any way. Remember … you are in charge and decide who you want to share this experience with.
This is a free service.

Hello my name is April and I am a commencing student in the Bachelor of Midwifery through the University of South Australia for 2009.
A requirement of the course is that a student midwife must complete 30 'follow through' experiences with women during the 3 years of the program. This includes:
* Accompanying the woman to at least two antenatal appointments with her midwife/doctor
* To visit or have telephone contact with the woman following the birth of her baby at least twice
If you would prefer not to have a student midwife present at the birth of the baby that is completely up to you. Not all follow throughs must involve being present for the baby's birth. However, if you would be comfortable with a student midwife being present for the birth of your baby it would provide an invaluable learning experience, which would mainly involve observation during the first year of training.
The aim of the program is to allow the student midwife to talk and form a relationship with the expectant mother and also the health care provider, while also learning from the experience.
I live in Port Augusta, SA. I would love to hear from any women who may be interested in having a student midwife support them throughout their pregnancy. I wouldn't mind travelling to Port Augusta's surrounding areas.
Feel free to PM me to ask any questions or for more information

Thankyou,
April

Hello ladies!
My name is Melanie, I live in southern Adelaide and I am a midwifery student at Flinders University. To gain registration I am required to follow through 15 women on their pregnancy and birthing journey.
As part of the follow through I will attend a minimum of 3 antenatal appointments, be there at the birth of your baby, and follow up with you postnatally. I will support you and you family physically and emotionally, and will always be respectful of the information that you give me and the level of involvement that you wish me to have.
And about me... I am a 27 year old wife and mother of three beautiful daughters ( 4, 3 and 1 yrs old). I am also a fully qualified Registered Nurse that has worked in a variety of public and private hospitals around Adelaide since my graduation in 2002.
It was because of having my children that I decided to become a midwife. I am a big believer in individualised care that should meet the needs of you and your family and not the doctors and midwives! I respect women's baby feeding decisions, however, I do have a special interest in breastfeeding and hope to become a lactation consultant one day. I also believe that women should have access to a variety of care options including alternative birthing methods ( my first bubba was a water baby!)
If you are based in Southern Adelaide and I sound like the kind of student that you would like to have follow with you on this wonderous journey please feel free to message me. I understand that some people have apprehensions about having students, however I will not replace your existing midwife/doctor; I will just be another member of your health care team. I hope to establish a relationship of trust with you and I would feel honoured and delighted should you chose to have me share this exciting experience with you.
Thankyou for your time and good luck with your pregnancies!
Cheers
Mel

Hello,
My name is Laura and I am a Midwifery student at ACU in Melbourne. As others have explained, as part of our degree we participate in what is known as a 'Community Follow Through Journey'. This 'journey' sees us working closely with mothers throughout their pregnancy and early parenting experiences. This doesn't just benefit students but provides women with a close one-to-one supportive relationship.
I wont bombard everyone with details here, so please pm me to find out more information on the 'journey', myself or have any specific queries answered.
I live in northern Melbourne, but am of course prepared to travel
I would love to hear from anyone who is interested!

Hello everyone
I am a 1st year midwifery student at UniSA and as part of my course I am required to follow 30 women through their antenatal care, birth and post partum care. I am looking for expectant mums in Adelaide (preferably the northern suburbs as that is where i live but am happy to travel if necassary) that would be happy to have me join them on their wonderful journey to help me to learn as much as I can about pregnancy and birthing babies.
I am required to attend at least two antenatal appointments, attend your labour and then have two follow up chats with you after baby is born. As I am only a first year student my role would be mainly observation and learning. Although I do hope to be able to be a support to you and your family as well.
I am a mum to 3 beautiful girls who although I am deemed to be a high risk pregnancy I managed to have with minimum intervention. I have had a negative birthing experiance as well as two wonderfully positive birth experiences so I hope that I can fully appreciate the need to have a positive birth. I was a young single mother for my first pregnancy and then married for my 2nd and third so i can also appreciate the needs and supports required for the different circumstances a woman may find herself in during pregnancy.
I am passionate about pregnancy, birth and advocating for womens choices. I consider myself blessed to have already attended births as a support person and look forward to being able to help women and their families in what should be a wonderful experience.
If you are interested in finding a bit more about the process or happy to have me follow you please send me a PM and we can organise a time to talk more!
Thanks for reading and I hope to meet some of you during my time as a student and as I begin my career as a midwife.

Hi
I'm Christine and im a Mum of 3 beautiful children. I am also a midwifery student at Curtin Uni and looking for Perth women less than 35 weeks pregnant to share their pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting experiences. As part of the 3 year midwifery degree, student midwives have to be involved in a continuity of care experience (CCE) for 30 pregnant women. The Continuity of Care Experience involves developing an ongoing midwifery relationship between the student and the woman from initial contact in early pregnancy through to the weeks immediately after the woman has given birth, across the interface between community and hospital settings.
The intention of the Continuity of Care Experience is to enable students to experience continuity with individual women through pregnancy, labour and birth and the postnatal period, regardless of the availability of midwifery continuity of care models. We always work under the supervision of your midwife and your medical team.
It is expected that:
• The Continuity of Care experience is considered a part of the practice component of the student’s learning.
• The student documents the CCE experiences.
• There is regular and ongoing evaluation of each student’s CCE experiences.
• Students will engage in 10 CCE experiences per year (pro-rata).
• At least half of these experiences will include the women’s labours.
• Students will usually attend at least 2 antenatal and 2 postnatal visits per woman.
• A Continuity of care experience will usually involve students engaging with women for an average of 20
hours per woman.
So if you would like a one to one supportive relationship during your pregnancy, birth and postnatal period and are interested in sharing your experiences with a midwifery student, or have any questions about the program, then please get in touch.
It takes nine months to tell the story.. but i want to hear yours

Hi, my name is Catherine, I am 23 years old and a first year midwifery student from ACU (Australian Catholic University) Melbourne.
As part of my course I am looking to recruit 20 pregnant mothers over the next three years to take part in the ACU Bachelor of Midwifery Community Follow Through Journey.
The Follow Through Journey allows students to become competent in communicating and providing support for women during their pregnancy, birth and early stages of parenting under the guidance of a midwife mentor and with support from the university.
Participants need to be less than 35 weeks pregnant and be willing to share their experiences of pregnancy. This could include a range of experiences such as attending antenatal classes, GP, Obstetrician or midwife appointments, general discussion about what it's like to be pregnant and if comfortable; the birth of your baby. How little or how much you choose to share or involve me in these experiences is entirely up to you and as a student I feel extremely grateful and appreciative of your time.
Participants are able to withdraw from the program at any stage and confidentiality and privacy are respected and adhered to at all times.
I am the 5th of 8 children and I appreciate what a special and exciting time pregnancy, birth and parenthood is and would be honoured to share in your experiences and gain the knowledge to become an exceptionally competent midwife!
For further information regarding the program, please don't hesitate to PM me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kindest Regards,
Catherine Harrington

Hi there,
My name is Caitlin, and I'm currently in my first year of Midwifery at Flinders University. I am currently searching for some lovely Adelaide ladies who would be willing to be a part of a "Follow-Through Experience".
What is a Follow-through Experience?
It is an opportunity for me as a student midwife to learn the meaning of pregnancy, birth and postnatal experiences for women and their families. During our three year course we are required to follow-through 30 women in order to gain registration. For each woman, we are asked to attend a minimum of three antenatal appointments, your labour and birth (where possible), and a minimum of two postnatal visits until your baby is six weeks old. At all visits we will be under the supervision of a registered midwife or other health care practitioner. It does not matter which model of care you have chosen, be it Midwifery Group Practice, shared care or obstetrician care; public or private; nor your chosen way of birth - natural or caesarean.
What are the benefits for you?
As a first-year, my role is primarily that of support as I begin to develop a knowledge of basic midwifery care. As I will meet with you numerous times before your birth, there will always be a familiar face, whether it be at antenatal appointments, upon arrival to hospital, during shift changes, or in those first few weeks with your new arrival. You'll not be alone during labour if your nominated support person needs a break. I am also someone with whom you can share your thoughts and feelings, as relatives and friends just may not understand!
If this may be of interest to you and you would like to know more about the program or myself, please feel free to contact me via PM.
Thanks,
Caitlin

Hi everyone!

My name is Melissa, and i have just completed my first year of the Bachelor of Midwifery at ACU.
As previously mentioned, a major component of our course is that we are required to undertake 20 "follow through journey's", of women 35 weeks or less. A follow through involves attending appointments, classes or any other acitivies related to your pregnancy even just meeting to have a chat, if you wish - for me to attend the birth in whichever way you want and also spending some time postnatally for checkups of just havig a chat.
The follow through is as little or as much involvement as you wish. It allows me to gain experience and knowledge on the process of pregnancy and birth and also will provide you with added support during your journey.
I live in North West Melbourne, in the Sunbury area so if you are interested or would like to know more information please feel free to contact me with a PM.

Hi there
My name is Katie and I am a Bachelor of Midwifery student at Flinders University. I am currently seeking Adelaide women looking for student support throughout their pregnancies.
A bit about me: I am a Registered Nurse, currently working in the SCBU (special care babies unit) at the Women's and Children's Hospital. I was very lucky to give birth to my first child in May 2009. I have decided to continue my studies into Midwifery as I am passionate about continuity of Perinatal care and women's right to chose how they wish to birth their children.
A bit about follow throughs: To meet the requirements of the university I am required to attend 2 ante natal appointments (With your OB, GP, Midwife etc) the birth (if you feel comfortable with that), and 1-2 post natal visits. I am also available for ongoing support throughout your pregnancy (as it's pretty fresh in my mind!).
If you are interested, have any questions or just want to know a bit more about the process, please feel free to PM me.
I look forward to hearing from you

and wish you all the best with this exciting time!

Hi all,
My name's Ellen O'Brien and I'm a second year Midwifery student at ACU. I'm looking for pregnant women interested in participating in the Follow-Through program. It's a great way for me to learn first hand but is also a great way for women to learn more about their pregnancy and childbirth experience, and receive extra support wherever it's needed.
So if you're pregnant and might be interested in participating in the program, or just want to ask me some questions, please send me a PM.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing from lots of you soon!
Thanks again,
Ellen.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! It is such a wonderful and exciting time in your life.
My name is Shannon, I am 34 years old, have 3 children (after a somewhat harrowing journey) and I am a 1st year Midwifery Student from the Macedon Ranges area.
It is a requirement of my course that I attend a minimum of 2 ante-natal appointments & visit, or have telephone contact, with the woman at least twice in the post-natal period and hopefully build such a rapport so as to enable both her and her family to feel comfortable enough for me to attend her labour & birth.
If you are in Melbourne, particularly the western suburbs or the Macedon Ranges and are happy to share your pregnancy journey with a Midwifery student then I would love to hear from you.
Please PM me for more information.

Hi everyone!
My name's Alex, and I'm a student midwife currently studying at Curtin University, WA. I am passionate about helping women from all walks and stages of life, which is why I was drawn to midwifery. I got into midwifery through interviewing a midwife a couple of years ago, and since then, it's all I've wanted to do. So I was absolutely thrilled to be accepted into Curtin's undergraduate midwifery program.
I'm looking for pregnant women in Perth, preferably north of the river, but I can be flexible. I'd love to help you though your pregnancies, and provide care however I can. If you're interested, please reply to this post, or send me a PM. I'll respond as promptly as possible.
Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi everyone!
I'm Bec & studying midwifery with UniSA and am also seeking Adelaide women who would be willing to share this special time.
I have background in nursing & have a fantastic 3 year old son of my own. From this, I know what an amazing difference it makes to have good supports and encouragement throughout pregnancy & birth. I am a firm believer in women having choices in care and the importance of the advocacy of these choices.
The follow-through program has been discussed in many of the previous posts - if you would be interested in having some additional support through your pregnancy, I would attend a few antenatal appointments with you, birth (if agreed to) and a visit afterwards. It is a flexible program, meaning if at any time your needs or wishes change, you can opt out.
Please feel free to PM or email with any questions at all!
Bec

Hello my name is Lana Murphy,
I am a student studying at ACU (Australian Catholic University). I am currently in the middle of my second year and have to "follow" 20 women through their pregnancy. I am 19 years old and live in the Pakenham area, but willing to drive out further!
The follow through program simply involves me being apart of women's pregnancies in any way (for a total of 10 hours per woman), it is completely confidential and the woman decides what appointments she would like me to attend and what she feels comfortable me practicing (e.g. adominal palpations, Blood pressure). I am there to observe, provide information and to give support.
The follow throughs I have had previously feel they have benefited from having me as an extra support person, and someone they can talk to during those sometimes long waiting times!
If you are interested or would like anymore information about the program please dont hesitate to contact me via PM.

Hi there,
Just updating that I am still looking for 2 or 3 Women to Follow.
If you are birthing at The Mater Mothers Brisbane and would like to know more about the Follow Through Journey, please PM me and we can go from there.
Hi there!
I am a 2nd year Midwifery Student/Qualified Doula at Australian Catholic Uni in Brisbane.
As apart of my studies, I am required to follow a certain number of women through their pregnancies, birth and into the newborn period. This is known as the Folllow Through Journey. The program enables Student Midwives to gain first hand Midwifery experience while studying.
What does the program involve?
You will recieve midwifery care from a Qualified Midwife and myself in a supporting role. I will provide one-to-one support during your pregnancy, birth and early parenting journey while obtaining the life experience I need to become Midwife. You are free to withdraw from this program at any time.
How can you become involved?
If you are less than 35 weeks, are birthing your baby at The Mater Mothers Brisbane and are interested or would like more information on the program, please PM me.
Also, I might just add that as long as I am doing the Degree (Complete end of 2011) I will "need" women less than 35 weeks for the Follow-Through Journey. If at any time I no longer require assistance or my circumstances change, I will edit this post to suit.
So if you are less than 35 weeks pregnant, birthing at the Mater and it is before the end of 2011, please feel free to contact me if you are interested.
Love and light to you.
x

Hello!
I am a student, studying a Bachelor of Midwifery at Flinders University, seeking mums-to-be in the Cairns area to 'follow through' their pregnancy and birth. The Continuity of Care Experience simply involves my attending a minimum of 3 antenatal appointments with you, the birth and seeing you during the first 6 weeks of your baby being born. All of the above are done under the guidance of a Registered Midwife.
The benefits of having a student midwife include continuity of care, developing a ‘one-to-one’ relationship, a familiar face during labour; and support during pregnancy, labour and after your baby is born. Having a student is free, and you are in charge, so if you decide at any time that you no longer want a student midwife involved in your care you, that’s okay!
A little about me… I am a mum of two myself, I joined EB in 2006, and started the Hyperemesis support group (in Specialised pregnancy thread)...
I believe that birth is a life event, a natural physiological process that your body is perfectly designed to do. I believe in woman directed care – your body, your birth, your choice. Philosophically I believe in midwifery model care, I believe that women should birth where, when and how they want. I am a homebirth supporter, although for the purposes of these experiences I am not permitted to attend homebirths in my role as a student. I am also a registered nurse; I have a Masters of Mental Health and currently work in adult mental health with a particular focus on perinatal mental health. I also have a Certificate II in Aromatherapy and a Certificate of Natural Therapies.
If you think you would be interested in having a student midwife follow you through this amazing time in your life, and you live in the Cairns area or surrounds, please email me: tiffanyk@live.com.au[/size]
Cheers
Tiff
