i went to Baby co this arvo looking for numerous baby items for our first. Whilst browsing i was talking to a lady there who was telling me that they are fazing out the "old" style cots- by this i mean the metal runners that run along the sides of the drop side, and replacing it with plastic!!!!!

I can't believe how ridiculous that would be we all know that toddlers are rought with cots - especially when they don't want to go to bed - they shake the railings pretty hard.

I am going to snatch up one of the "old" cots bbefore they go, personally i don't think the plastic runners will still be working in 5-10 yrs time!!!!

Just wanted to share the info with you all

That certainly does sound like planned obsolescence! Our cot, which has been used for all 4 children, was old when my younger sister used it! It must be over 30 yo and it's still going strong!

Hi! First time on EB. Just heard about it. Had to tell you if you are looking for a cot or ANYTHING for bub you have to go to Kidessentials in Phillip. They have everything! and their prices are so much cheaper. The service is fantastic too. I was recommended by another friend. Worth a visit.

Might be worth checking Choice magazine on cots. Cots are one thing that sometimes don't meet the Australian Standards for safety, even if they have the sticker on the box that says they do. I wonder if Choice has done any research on the metal vs plastic runners?

By the way, I have two identical cots (older baby is only 15mths and new baby due in 6 weeks) and they don't have a dropside at all. Only time this is a problem is now that my big fat gut stops me reaching down to the bottom of my older girl's cot - once I give birth I hope this won't be a problem! Otherwise I could stand on the Yellow Pages to put my girl down to sleep..... I prefer no dropside as it's one less safety issue to consider.

Hi Both my cousin and I bought a 'Storkcraft' brand cot from babyco. Both of ours had the plastic runners and both of ours have broken - both used for one child only. My cousin was told by the shop that it couldnt be fixed as the company had gone out of buisness. ?

I like my drop sides because I leave it down when they're infants so they're easier to get in and out, then put them up again once they're more active until they're old enough to get in and out safely - then I have a ready made toddler bed.
