Hi all.
I am 22 yrs old and expecting my first child. I went to a GP in Belconnen, for my first check up- but was extremely surprised at my Dr's reaction. She was surprised that i was excited about the pregnancy - although not planned. She was extremely negative and as pregnancy is already make me soo hormonal i just cried as i got to my car. She made me feel too immature and that i should be married before even trying to conceive. Even thought my partner and i have been together for 4 years.
I have now found a wonderful GP and thought i had found a good OB but have since heard that he is a little rude, inconsiderate and old fashioned!!! Don't think i'd be able to cope with that. Does anyone know of an ob bthat is supportive of young women and not judgemental!!!
I would prefer to deliver in Calvery as it is closer to home but could probably go to JJMH is i had to
!
Thanks Anna

Annajane, I am your age and my Ob, Jakub Dreher, was awesome. He works out of Calvary and is a very, very nice guy. Other mums on here who have had him will agree.
Sorry that GP was so rude. Your age is by no means a reflection of your capabilities as a mum, nor is your marital status.
Good luck

I have had 3 bubs and John Hehir delivered all three. Initially I found him to be a bit, ummm, "distant" maybe...but then again I was new to this preg thing and didn't know what to expect either...as the pg progressed and I got to know him better I found he was just what I wanted.
I worked out it was always best to take a list of questions with me to each visit, no matter how silly I thought they were, and that way I could ask him whatever I needed to know. I left each visit feeling very reassured. A big bonus is that his rooms are on the Calvary campus so he wasn't very far if needed in a hurry! He also called me at home to check up on me towards the end of my first and I found that really good too.
In the end its your call...everyone is different...try a couple and you'll soon work it out...what is great for one person doesn't necessarily suit another.
All the best and enjoy this very special time!!
Cheers

I can only recommend Dr Armellin, he delivers at both
Calvary & John James, he delivered both my boys & I found
him to be excellent. if I have # 3 I will definately try to get him
again. He had a lot of young women attending his office
whilst I was seeing him.
He was easy to talk & I had no problems with him at all.
Everyone has a different opinion about the various Drs/Obs
around town one may hate them, another may love them, it is
best you form your own opinion rather that rely on what
others may say.

Anna,I can second Dr Dreher.
Let me let you in on a little secret. I am 12 years older than you. And I am no more qualified/suitable/capable of having have a baby than you. Trust me, I had no clues when I got pregnant, didn't even know what a bassinet was. But I am learning stuff everyday. I'd probably be your old GPs dream Mum on paper - but not in reality. There are pros and cons to both younger and older Mums, and honestly, that GP sucks. AND I refuse to get married - happy "living in sin" with the bestest partner :-)
Congratulations on the pregnancy and enjoy EB, the ladies here are awesome and so kind and encouraging, especially to a clueless first time Mum like me :-)

I didn't have an ob (I went through TCH antenatal clinic) but my GP was very similar to your original one. When I went to see him about being pregnant he got out flyers concerning my "options". I was shocked, I'm 26 (was 25) and I'm married and he thought I was far too young. Its so rude, especially as I didn't ask his opinion! I went simply to find out what my birthing options were, nothing else! I swiftly changed GPs.
I personally don't think that 22 is 'so young' that it would warrant that kind of reaction (but then neither is 26!) its not like you are 13 or something.
Anyway, I have nothing to add on the ob thing, only to say that I think due to a lot of first time mothers being in their 30s (especially in Canberra where I read the average age of a first time mum is 31 point something, "older" than the rest of the country) GPS are sometimes suprised. Its like you don't fit in with teenaged mums nor do you fit in with older first time mums.
Anyways, good luck with your pregnancy. I think its an adventure no matter what age you are!

Sorry to hear that you had a bad time with your OB. Id be interested to hear who it was... My OB was a bit rude, and I was VERY unimpressed with him during my birth, but thats another story
Just to let you know, I was only just 22 when I gave birth to my DD at Calvary, and I found them wonderful. There was absolutely no issues with me being young. Hope you end up finding an OB, Ive heard good things about Dr Armellin, Dr Hehir and Dr Dreyer

Hi
I had Dr Armellin. He was always very positive about me being young (at 25 I wasnt that young) and would joke around saying I was fit and young and I would be in and out of the delivery suite in 10 minutes - 8 hours in reality but I have no complaints.
I liked all his staff - his receptionists and the midwife he has there and was never made to feel silly or inferior at anytime. DP and I arent married and that was never an issue either (I heard someone mention that there OB had an issue with unmarried/single mums).
I delivered at John James and thought it was fantastic.
Good luck
Michelle
Maddison is

Another vote of support for Dr Dreher at Calvary. He delivered my first in April 04 and he'll be delivering my second in Sept this year. Very supportive of my choices.

Another vote here for Dr Hehir. I starting seeing him when i moved to Canberra at 28 weeks with my twins. He was fantastic and when the push came to shove when i delivered them and things got a bit worrying he was a great Ob. I had a caesar and you can hardly see the scar. He is a wonderful Ob and i would recommend him to anyone. He made me wait til i was 39 weeks to have my boys, but i am so pleased as they were very healthy.
Whoever you choose you will have to book in early as they all book up very quickly.

Hi,
I can also vouch for Dr Hehir, who took care of me during my first pregnancy, and I will be second him this time round with our second one. He also delivered three of my friend's babies, and all have wonderful opinion of him too.
One thing to be aware of, most Obs will have a rotation system in place for weekends. It is worth checking out who your Ob will rotate with and make sure you are happy with the alternative. As murphy's law would have it, my boy came on his due date which was Dr Hehir's weekend off. In the end I had Dr Armellin come in to deliver - who was also fantastic.
Hope your prenancy experience improves quickly!

have you considered going through the antenatal clinic at calvary all the abs there are great and they are not judge mental as they get all ages going in there i was 18 when i had my first and got no signs of dusigust until i went out and you got all the old ladies just staring at you but it will pass and all you have to do is just think that you can do it and no matter what others say it will be here and you and your partner will have the best times of your life. and congratulation and good luck if you want the antenatal clinic number call 62016111 and ask to be put through.

Another vote for Dr Armellin. I saw him for two of my three boys and regretted I didn't see him for the third ( I went through the ante natal clinic instead). If we have #4 I will definately go through him!!!!! He has a quirky sense of humor and wants all of his patients to have five children lol but is'nt disappionted when they don't.
Make sure you smile today,
Natalie

I love Dr Dreher, he is fabtstic, has so much time for you, and convinced me to have another natural birth instead of the caesar I was insisting on having after my last experience. He was right and it was great.
