DS is turning 3 in august and he's still got cradle cap.. Its not bothering him and you cant see it unless you brush or wash his hair.. is there anything I can do to help get rid of it or will he just grow out of it eventually?
when he was little his head crusted over quite badly.. I'd soak him in a bath of water/oil and would use a baby brush to get rid of it only to have it come back with a vengence
*sob* my 4 month old DD just started getting it too

They usually recommend applying a softening agent, leave overnight then wash out the next day, using a baby comb/ brush or face washer to loosen the crusts off. That is great for bald-headed babies, but for older kids with more hair it may not work...
I have just started trying Egozite cradle cap lotion (from chemist) which has salycitate acid in an oil base, and seems to be doing the trick so far. The acid (also found in face cleansers and is a similiar agent to aspirin) dissolves the crusts...

stupid question, but its not sorriasis (sp?) is it? My DH has that on his scalp, it's not as bad if he keeps his hair short. My DS has what I thought was cradle cap still as well, but lately I've been wondering if maybe he has what DH has. Would love some answers too. DS is 20 months old. Don't mean to upset ya, just wanting some answers as well.
We have tried the egozite stuff and it doesn't work for us. My DD had cradle cap too, she just grew out of it after going bald as a badger and looking like an old man. Least when DS went bald it was ok that he looked like a little old man

Psoriasis... my psoriasis is mostly comfined to my scalp, so that could be a possibilty. Cradle cap actually is actually seborrhoeic dermatitis.
QUOTE
Cradle cap is a skin condition that affects babies. It causes yellowed crusts on the scalp. It is commonly present in the first three months of life, and is rare after the age of one year. It is a form of dermatitis, which causes inflammation of sebaceous glands in the skin (seborrhoeic dermatitis). These glands help waterproof the skin by making a slightly greasy substance called sebum. Seborrhoeic dermatitis happens when the glands make too much sebum, which then traps shed skin flakes. Cradle cap usually clears by itself after a few months but many parents prefer to remove it because they do not like the look of it. If scaly patches appear on the face or other parts of the body, this is not cradle cap and needs to be checked by your doctor. Cradle cap is not contagious and it is not caused by poor hygiene or bad parenting.

Psoriasis can cause itching scalp
Psoriasis is a relatively common skin condition that affects about three per cent of the population. It is often confined to the scalp, elbows and knees. While seborrhoeic dermatitis tends to involve almost all the scalp, psoriasis often occurs in small, localised patches of redness with quite prominent thick scaling. Because psoriasis may only occur on the scalp, it can be mistaken for a severe case of dandruff. Psoriasis has a genetic link - there is often a family history of the condition. It may be triggered by some form of stress.

Both of my sons had terrible cradle cap, and for both of them I used a tiny amount of anti dandruff shampoo, Pert the 2 in 1 one. Recently we moved to Nth Queensland and the humidity made my youngest sons scalp smell terrible so I washed his hair with the shampoo and sat with a baby comb, combing it out of his hair. It has worked perfectly.
DD still had a few little bits of it after age 2y so I used a brush and focused on those bits every few days. I also put vegetable oil on 1/2h before a shower. And the last couple of tiny bits I gently picked off with my fingernails

and they never came back...
I only wash her hair with shampoo about once a week, sometimes less. The rest of the time is just water and whatever QV wash gets in it while doing her face and neck.
My DH used to get dermatitis on his face from soap and overproduction of oils until he stopped using soap and switched to QV products.

DD1 still has a bit, she had a headfull of head about 7 cms long when she was born so it made it really hard to get out. I just try and comb her hair after her bath and I get a bit at a time. No one can see it, so I am dealing with it a bit at a time.

thanks for all the replies

The Psoriasis theory was interesting to read because there is a history of skin problems on DP's side of the family.. DS also had really bad contact dermatitis on his legs when he started crawling (we've got thick carpet - thank god were moving!) it used to crust up all over the front of his legs, arms and belly - it looked like a week old graze that was half scabbing up.. he has grown out of it but the stuff on his scalp is still there..
not sure if that is psoriasis though.. he is not complaining about itching and it looks exactly like the crusty cradle cap I used to brush off when he was little.. also, if you brush his hair back to expose the scalp it actually looks like some of his hair is stuck inside the crusts IYKWIM
thanks for the tips - I might try the oil and or sorbolene cream - and will mention it to his doctor at his next check up

I used olive oil, a soft comb, wiggles on TV or Poko, and combed it out very patiently.
Good luck

All 3 of my kids has it. DS is now just growing out of it at 7. My dd's both get itchy heads from it. I suffer really bad dandruff myself as an adult and have done ever since I was a baby (called cradle cap in babies/toddlers, dandruff in adults same thing).
NOTHING I do helps at all. Shampoos's help for a little then I get use to it and they stop working. It gets so bad sometimes that I scratch until my head bleeds :-(. Anyway, OT there
Sometimes they just grow out of it, other times it may be something that they will always have.

My DS 3 years old suffered since being small (I would pick it and really upset him).
I just switched to Gaia products for him as well as the baby and have noticed a huge improvement. Then I read the information that came with it and saw that it was meant to help with cradle cap.
Fortunately, Eloise has never had it, and hopefully she never will.
