Chelle - I would be annoyed. However if your friend really wants to name her daugher Jessica and you also name your daughter Jessica it might make a nice connection for the girls.
I hope she doesn't go with Jessica if you do find out your having a girl. But if she does, I think a friendship that has been going for that long will survive this.
Have you told he how you feel or are you waiting until you find out if you are having a girl?
ETA Ok - that changed suddenly. I wouldn't use a dogs name for a childs middle name.

Changed the topic. Was feeling petty but it's good to read what you wrote. Thanks.

Tate is a great name. Although, if it were me, I couldnt have my child share my dogs name -- there are so many nice names out there after all!

Was going to write it up in another user name because i thought better of it. It is something that is just on my mind. I feel like it's stupid to be so concerned about a name. I guess it's more than the issue of them having the same name.
I really just wanted to know if others would feel the same. Sorry for any confusion.
Thanks blondeboys - didn't know that. Always wondered where his girls name came from.

No, I wouldn't even consider it. Some people say to change the dog's name etc but IMO that's just as bad, it's like the dog never mattered at all.

one day (hopefully sooner than you child) your dog will die, and you will have your childs middle name to remember youre dearly loved dog by... i think its a good idea... as it is only a middle name, i think most people wouldnt even associate the 2 unless you pointed it out... would be a very different story if you were thinking of it for the first name though, lol...

I wouldn't do it. I would change the name of the dog.

I have a friend who used two of her beloved dog's names for her DD and DS. Both dogs have passed away now and it really is a lovely reminder of them. They're both lovely names, not particularly 'doggy'. I think Tate would make a lovely MN.
If we have a boy in the future I would consider using our first dog's name as his MN. (Griffen) That said, I would have loved to name DD Willow but I didn't as another friend has a dog named Willow. Maybe I'll use it if I have another DD.

I say go for it.

To me it would depend on the origin of the name.
If you gave the dog a name that was already special to you for some reason, I would be think it was fine to use the same name as a MN.
If you're passing it on because it's the dog's name, I'm not particularly fond of the idea.
