I'll admit it is my first reaction. I'm trying to ignore that reaction and focus on the cool Rufus' out there (Rufus Wainwright, Rufus Sewell), but I can't totally get over it.
I do think it's one that has the potential to grow in popularity, due to Rufus Wainwright's popularity mainly, although not exactly reach mainstream.
I'll admit to feeling weird about the spelling for no real reason. Just typing it then, not sure why.

Maybe for a fleeting second, but more likely to think of Rufus Wainwright.
Think of how many dogs there are out there named Ben, Max and Sam.
I think it's a great name.

Love it. Definitely not a dog's name.

14/04/2008, 02:32 PM
Max is the most common dog and cat name and I used it for my son
Rufus was the name of my brothers Teddy Bear

Love it

I was considering Felix for our second (had she been a he) and everybody was singing "Felix the cat, the wonderful, wonderful cat". It didn't phase me

Yep. Sorry. As soon as I saw rufus in the title heading, dog sprung to my mind.

The name doesn't make me think of a dog but it makes me think 'Rufus the Doofus'...

Sorry, just my initial reaction.

I personally think of the Rufus from the 'Bill and Ted's' movies lol

I'm a shamless Keanu fan so it rates high for me lol

Rufus is cool! Rufus is the kind of guy you'd meet at the pub to tell your woes to, and he'd make you feel really good about things and then take you on an adventure holiday.
That is what I think of when I hear Rufus.
I must admit that as a vet it was hard not to think of many, many names that I have animal associations with. bella and Ella are two of the most popular names for labradors, but you don't see them becoming any less popular for little girls. I say go for it! It's what Badly Drawn Boy called his first boy too. Tres cool.
Cheers, Cass

I think Rufus Wainwright when I hear it. A dog doesn't spring immediately to mind.

Agree with PP that Max, Sam etc are more like dog names...

As soon as I saw the title I thought of a dog!
But then again that's because I knew a Rufus and he was a silly little dog

I think you answered your own question by asking the question to start with

However,

Rufus from Bill & Ted (there are whole scenes playing in my head now) and Rufus Wainwright here too.
FWIW one of the PP suggestions of Roscoe made me think of dogs.

I had a dog named Rufus. If you really love the name, then it shouldn't matter what others think.

I do automatically think of a dog, but then both of my kids have names that I wouldn't have thought were animal names (

) and yet when I read peoples pets names on here they appear on those lists!!

I think it's a great name, heck I'd use it but our surname starts with R so it sounds funny

It's a classic name.
