hi, anyone like the name India for a girl?, I already have a little girl Jemima and a boy Sam.
fifi-trixibelle
I'm not too keen on it sorry. I don't mind Indiana and Indigo with nickname Indi though.
mumwith2boys
I really like it for a little girl i would love to use it but with a last name of jones i dont think it would go as she would get indianna jones .... i thinks its pretty
just-call-me-martha
I love the name india but hubby doesn't so I won't be getting it past him

Corrie:)

Personally I like Indianna better then India as a first name
Edinburgh
I love it wub.gif and it is on my girl's shortlist if this one is a girl!!!

I strongly dislike it. It's 'trendy', it's culturally offensive, and it sounds like a bogan just trying to get the nickname Indi "cos it sounds sooooo cuuuute".

Your other kids' names are great but I don't think it's a good match. Are you English by chance?
Pocahontas
I love your other kids' names but not really fussed on India. I prefer names where the child can do anything with it. For example, I can't really see a foreign affairs minister or a multi-national CEO being called "India". An actor or artist - yes!
samui
I think it is a lovely name and much better sounding than Indiana.

I have no idea how someone could think it is "culturally offensive"? That makes no sense at all! It is not bogan either!

Go with your heart!

One of my dearest friends from high school is named India. She absolutely loves her name and always had lots of lovely compliments about it. For her it was actually a family name as her grandmother is named India as is her aunt. I think her great-grandparents must have been WAY ahead of their time.

I think it's getting a bit too common now though.
Swahili
It's not one of my favourites.
BrindleGirl
I think its a lovely sounding name however I couldn't use it. I much prefer more traditional names. However India is still a lovely name original.gif
ljl211
I don't mind it at all! I know DH would hate it though! I have a friend with a little girl Indah which is just as lovely!
JustLynn
I don't like it very much. I am not a fan of place names. I vastly prefer it to Indianna though.

What about Indira or Indra?
clumpy
It's culturally offensive because it was first used as a name in England by the upper-class as an "exotic" name during the colonisation of India. So it's basically a throwback to British Imperialism.
MadamFrou-Frou
I love it as a name but I would feel inappropriate using it. Maybe a MN.

'Indah' means beautiful in the national language of Indonesia. I remember that one from my school days, when I named my fish 'Indah' laughing2.gif

I'm not a big fan of India or Indianna, but think Indira is lovely.
tondall
Not bad, but I would prefer Indira or Indiana with nn Indi also...
~FrenchFries~
Not my style, but if you like it then use it
Doppelgänger
I don't like it simply because to me it is like calling your daughter America, China etc.
I must be one of those bogans just trying to get the nickname Indi "cos it sounds sooooo cuuuute" though, because I named my daughter Indigo.

I think with a gorgeous name like Jemima, you need a name like Matilda or Ivy.

-Tina
butterflymama
i like it , even idiana or indigo ivy as other have mentioned
~Nix~
NMS but it is kinda cute original.gif
tigerfield
I like the name India. I think Indiana, Indigo and Indira are also lovely.

I LOVE it and have for a long time. It is what we will call bubs if its a gir!! I would like to use Indiana but the middle name we are using is Janice and Indiana Janice sounds a bit too Indiana Jones like for me laughing2.gif
mum_to_cutie
i rather like india, love indiana too though...
reneelovescraig
Another fan of Indira here...much better than a place name IMO.
riwymk
I really like it. There are other spellings though that I like better, but can't think of them at the moment.
Foo-Foo-the-Snoo
I adore the name India and it is at the top of our list of names for girls. I certainly don't think it is the slightest bit bogan!

Love it wub.gif
rua
I wouldn't use it unless I had a connection with the country. But it is cute.
Ianthe
I love the name India-it is a guilty pleasure of mine wink.gif

I have a friend named Indica. She is half indian half canadian and her parents thought they were being clever ph34r.gif She does get called Indi for short.
anon0
I like Indigo or Indira, I think India would be cute while she was a child but not so nice as an adult.
melissa1781
Old post I know, but I must have my say...

I am one of those bogans - Because my daughters name is Indi "cos it sounds sooooo cuuuute"
mummato2beautifulboys

so it can't just be after the country then? happy.gif

I think alot of names may have had iffy beginnings but we need to remember that languages and meanings evolve and what they used to mean is not what they may imply now... i mean, i'm sure Gay(e) was a lovely name once!

Agreed. It always makes me think of India Wilkes in Gone With The Wind, which I love, so that makes it a teensy bit better. Indianna is just awful, especially with the incorrect spelling.

Indira is nice.
