DH and I are at loggerheads over baby names again.
We always said that this babies middle name would be Laura (his grandmothers name).
We went to a wedding yesterday and heaps of people were asking us about names and someone suggested that her first name be Laura. Now DH has got a bee in his bonnet about it and REALLY, REALLY wants to call her Laura.
I like the name, but to me it's just seems like an old name - either a Nanna name or a 70's name. With so many pretty names around, I just can't get my head around it. I'm really happy for it to be her middle name though.
So honest opinions please - if you heard that a baby had been called Laura, would you think it's a strange choice nowdays?

I actually LOVE the name Laura... it ticks all my boxes: elegant, uncommon, old-fashioned (but not dated). Unfortunately my cousins name is Laura (she is 20), so that meant it was off the list.
Using it as a middle name might be a good compromise though if you can't agree otherwise.

Laura is a great name.
1970's? I don't know but I always associate the 70's with Jennifer, Melissa, Melinda, Michelle, Kylie, Joanne, Danielle, Samantha - you get my drift. I was born in the 1970's and I have never met a Laura. I have met many Jennifers, Jennys, Jenns...

the name Laura.....it is DD1 name (Laura Faye), and it suits her to a tee. She also has a big brother Jack!! As PP said, elegant, a little uncommon at the time I named her (I think it is slightly more common now) and a lovely feminine name. What name did you have in mind as her first name?
Me 38
DH 40
DS1 13
DD1 11
DD2 8.5
DS2 6

Any of your initial choices of 1st name would go great with Laura as a first name
Laura Isabelle
Laura Abbey
Laura Chelsea
I am a big fan of incorporating family names - it is because of them that our little ones are here! My boys both have two middle names - DS1 has his Grandfathers names, Jack David James, and DS2 has his Great Grandfathers names - Harrison Charles Andrew. DD1 has my mums name as her middle name Laura Faye, and DD2 has her Great Grandmothers name - Madelyn Ruth. I think it is a great honour (especially when the name is as beautiful as 'Laura'!)

Mumof4: We're a big fan of family names as well.
DS1 is Liam George - George being a tradition that the first boy born in every generation has George in his name (from my family)
DS2 is Jack Graham - Graham being DH's middle name and DH's father's first name.
You ladies are really starting to bend me toward it now.

Liam, Jack & Laura.....awwwwww
Try saying the name out loud (that is what got me with Laura....for the first 13wks pg, I was leaning towards Sarah - met a baby born 4 days before DS1 called Laura, and fell in LOVE with the name (thank god DH loved it too......all our childrens names are the ONLY ones he liked - there was no room for compromise!!) Also, there are no real nn you can get with Laura - the only thing we ever call our Laura is Lulu!

Hey Kylee,
Not long to go now! I was wondering just the other day if you had had your bubs yet!
I think Jasmine Laura is gorgeous! Or you could have it around the other way - Laura Jasmine. Jazz is a cute NN!

Laura is very pretty though I do prefer Lauren and Lara. If I was you I would use it as a middle name though as I find Liam and Laura to be too close for siblings.
From your list I think Abbey Laura flows really well. I also like Isabelle Laura and Amy Laura, but only Amy spelt like this. Chelsea is fine too but it doesn't flow with Laura IMO. I dislike Jasmine as a first name.

I know two Lauras under 6yrs and think it is really lovely, classic name. Much prefer it to Lauren and Lara.
ETA - it IS in the top 100 for girls names in NSW last year so definitely not just a nana name!

I like the name Laura!

But I am terribly biased.
I'm 27 (so not a 70's name for me!) and have in my life met only one other Laura. As for nicknames people are creative and will shorten anything if they want to. I've had people try and call me 'laws' or 'loz'.

The only nickname I answer to is LJ and only because of my siblings persistence with calling me that.
I like Laura Isabelle if you have a short last name or Laura Jasmine if you have a long last name.

Its funny you say an old nanna name or a name from the 1970's as I've never thought of Laura that way.
I guess because my baby sister is Laura
I love it!!!
Growing up she was the only Laura she knew and even now I very rarely come across another Laura.
I do not see it as an old name at all.
Its beautiful.

I love "Laura". DS2 would have been "Laura", had he been a DD. One of my nieces (younger than my 4) is "Lauren", which kind of puts the "kybosh" on us calling another DD "Laura".
