My baby girl name thread.
I will give you my background first. I am a New Zealander with ancestors from England, Scotland,Denmark, Australia, New Zealand(Maori) and France. My wife is Cambodian. We have a baby boy named Darcy. My wife is pregnant. She is due in October. We do not know what sex the baby will be. I would like this thread just on girl names. I had another thread before on possible boy names.
My wife said I must think up names. But she has the final decision. She does not like Cambodian names. The baby will have a middle name starting with 'R' and a last name starting with 'M'.
If you would like to contribute please go ahead. Please would you be so kind as to tell me why you like or dislike a name.
I do not like nicknames especially.
I like unusual names but I do not want my child to have a name that invites teasing. I do not think that an unusual name invites teasing just because it is unusual.
My wife and I have no problem with me being New Zealand, she being Cambodian and our baby having a name that is Japanese, Italian, French or any other ethnic origin.
Here is my list of names-

Amarina means - rain in one of the Aboriginal languages.
Arabella means - beautiful.
Belena is my creation- a mix of Belle and Helena.
Casami is my creation.
Cosette means victorious people.
Jenessa is a mix of Jennifer and Vanessa.
Mizumi is my creation. Mizu means water in Japanese, and Mi means beautiful.
Virginia means pure.

I think Amarina and Arabella are both lovely names - and both go well with Darcy! I'm not sure I have a reason for liking them - they just roll off the tongue easily and smoothly and have a beautiful sound to them, AND a lovely meaning behind them!
And both are unusual, but not "weird"! original.gif

Hi there,

I really like Arabella. original.gif

The reason I like Arabella is that it simply sounds very pretty!

Amarina is also rather nice.

Good luck!! happy.gif

Hi! I like the name Arabella. I think it is beautiful.
I'm not sure if you are after ideas from others but another name I really like is Amaya which is Japanese for "night rain" and I think it is beautiful.

Amarina - I've never heard this before but I think it's absolutely gorgeous.
Arabella - pretty but doesn't excite me.
Belena makes me think whales (baleine in French)
Casami - interesting unsure.gif
Cosette - pretty, feminine, I've always liked it (from Les Miserables)
Jenessa - interesting again, but I think these two names are fine on their own and don't need merging
Mizumi - this sounds quite nice with the Japanese pronunciation, but in Aussie it sounds quite bogan and the pronunciation will be more like Mizuumi, which means 'lake' in Japanese...
Virginia I've never liked, don't know why.

Amarina would be my pick wub.gif feminine-sounding but strong.

I love Arabella wub.gif. I'm not keen on the others but have not heard many of them before.
rose-gardener
Virginia - I love this name as long as it is said properly Ver-JIN-ee-ah not Ver-JIN-yah
Arabella - very pretty
Amarina - lovely
Cosette - lovely

Mizumi - it is an existing name/nickname/word in Japanese. I would be cautious using it.

I am not a fan of made up or blended names.

Amarina- I think this is nice, I actually used to live in an Amarina Avenue original.gif
Arabella- I like this but your daughter will get the nickname Bella.
Cosette- This is beautiful.
Virginia - Not really a fan of this name at all. Too many chances of awful nicknames.

I am also not a fan of made up names.

Good Luck, I wish all husbands had the same enthusiasm for names that you do original.gif

My brother is in the same situation. Cambodian wife, wanting non cambodian name etc. They are having a girl. At the moment they are looking at Chantelle. My brother's wife's name is Channy and so he thought they could incorporate it into a western name. But so far SIL is not sold on it.

How about Sophie or Sophia? It's almost the same as the Khmer name Sopha, but very western.

Personally I think there are some beatiful Khmer girls' names. It's a shame so many Khmer mums don't want to use them.

Amarina or Casami are my favourites out of your list. I wouldn't go with Mizumi, I think it's beautiful, but because your daughter will obviously look Asian she will forever have people assuming she is of Japanese heritage. This could be annoying for her later on.

Thanks for all the replies. My wife's friend's baby is named Sophia. So that name is out.
On another board many said that Casami sounded like salami. I do not think so.
My baby Darcy does not really look asian. I am not sure if I call the baby Mizumi people will assume she is Japanese.

Arabella gets my vote wub.gif

I think it's a stunning name, looks nice written down & there is not too many different ways to say it.
