Has anyone never had to spell out their child's name or even their own name??
Do people always spell your name, or your child's name correctly?
I have a plain name, yet there are about 3 different ways people spell it!
Jane/Jayne
Sarah/Sara
Maddison/Madison
Wyneta/Wyneata/Juanita
Mollie/Molly
Lachlan/Lochlan
John/Jon
Bert/Burt
Just some I thought of!

ETA - Hope this is allowed, but bought me to another question....
So, how do you choose a child's name without having this problem??
Whether you use a simple, common name or an unusual name, you still have to spell it out, right??
Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, one shouldn't have to spell out their name if it's Tom or Grace. Or Tom could be Thom I suppose.....

Yes!!!
There are numerous ways to spell my name - and even when I have spelt it for someone - eg email, they still get it wrong!! (This has happened already today at work when I had an email response to a fax I sent - with my name clearly spelt!!)
I'm a Sheree , IMO exactly how you pronounce it: She - ree!
My name is continually spelt Sharee. I have also seen it spelt:
Sherie
Sharie
Cherie
Cheree
Cheri
Sheri
Sherree
Sherrie
I do not appreciate being called Sherry either!
I also have an uncommon surname - so I normally have to spell the whole lot! Just the way it is tho...
So no guesses why my DD's name is Charlotte...

Yes, we always have to correct people with both DD and DS names.
DD Kloe - This is my fault I liked the alternate way of spelling Chole, now we just spell her name out automatically.
DS Zack - we have to spell his name because people usually spell it Zach or Zac

Yes!! My name is pretty simple yet the odd couple seem to spell it with an A so instead of Carmen they put Carman!!
Hubbys name is fine but again he get the odd "is it spelt with a C or K" his name being Christian you would think its pretty basic!
As for the kids, i always spell out Kaylan's name. Most people get it right cos its spelt how its pronounced maybe a bit more Kaylyn sounding... and as for Levi.. well if you know the jeans then you know the spelling! Drs always seem to pronounce his name like Lev-ee
I dont bother correcting them cos most of the time when i'm there to see a Dr i'm too tired and worn out to bother correcting them!

I have a "normal" name but my parents spelt it differently and for the past 38 years I have to spell it out EVERYWHERE I go.
My DP and I will be getting married soon and his surname we have to spell out too so I am going to have to spell out my whole name!
I like having an unusual spelling but it can get tiresome at times

My first son i Ronan
there is Ronen/Ronin as well.
My other son is Axton and while I am not sure if there are any alternative spelling. I guess you could have Axston. I often get people saying oh what was that Astin (think most of them are thinking of the car Astin Martin like in the Bond films. lol.

Yes I have always have to spell my name, Annah, people write Anna and I say with a "h" then it gets confusing. People always ask "where does that come from" I say my Mum just wanted to be a pain. I think it is really rude when people know and still leave off the h.
I like being Annah instead of Anna.

YES! My name is not very difficult, however, it has soooo many ways of spelling it so I automatically spell it for people and on top of that, the way my name is spelt, it looks like an entirely different name.
My parents really didn't think of this when they were naming me and I now answer to two different names....how silly
I swore I would never give my children strange and unusual names and/or spellings of names, it's just plain annoying!

I have never been asked to spell Rebecca!
Although Kim is another story! I never used to but now everyone assumes it's with a Y..... Grrrr
Don't even go there with Alessia! I can hardly get anyone to pronounce it let alone spell it! Poor darling!
And to think it is such a common name in Italy (where she was born).....

Never had a problem with my own name or DD's, and DH hasnt ever had any issues either. Used to have to spell out my maiden name but that was purely because it was very Italian and not spelt as it sounds.
I did have someone spell my name 'Alanda' when booking a fishing charter for my parents...but I put that down to the fact he didnt hear my name properly lol.

I always have to spell my name! it's Alison...not Allison, Alyson, Allyson or Alisen....
I was hesitant at giving my kids an unusual name, but when I realised how often I spelt out my own name, it's not such a worry anymore!

I've never had anyone ask me how to spell DS's name (Ryan) - pretty straightforward there!
DD (Amelie) is a WHOLE different story. I always have to spell it and have had dozens of different variations of spelling and pronunciation
boy0hboy
09/04/2008, 02:20 PM
I've never had to spell Liam. And mine and DH's names are pretty straight forward too - Mary and Ben.
Ewan does need to be spelt though but it's no big deal. Most people know Ewan McGregor so I can always use him as an example which I don't mind at all!

Yes!
I can't believe how many people spell DD's name (Ava) either Ayvah, Avah, or even Eva considering we pronounce it with a strong 'A'.
Thankfully, DS' name seems quite simple, Leo.
Mine & DH's names... don't get me started...
There are so many ways to spell Karina, and more often then not I get called Katrina, even after telling ppl my name!
TayDan
09/04/2008, 02:23 PM
i often have to say..... with an A!!! (not ER)
or people pronounce it pet-a
i have to spell DD's name, cause there is so many variations of Taylor.
And ive just learnt the same with having Amelia too..
(apparently, i thought it would only be spelt the one way??)
Both Jordan & Brendan (DH) have to just say AN, not en or on..
and our surname, MY GOSH!!!!!!!!
i never say it to anyone new now (well i haven't for about 10yrs) i just straight out say...... i'll spell it for you... lol

because I have spent my whole life either spelling my names to people or having them misspronounced, I really wanted to give my kids names that it wouldnt happen with so we have Peter (as long as they know its a boy they get it right as there is the feminine spelling as PP pointed out), and Grant.
never had it written incorrectly which was my intention.

Always!!! I have Maddison so there is always the double d thing there, Jacob-usually they get this right although I have seen many... different shall we say ways. Hallie well noone can even pronounce that one and you would be surprised how often I get asked how to spell Alex
But the important thing is I know how to spell them and I love all their names!

Always for my DD & sometimes for myself
But it is entirely my fault with DD - her name is Irish Gaelic - Aislinn (pronounced Ashlyn) & we chose to keep the traditional spelling - yep she'll hate me for it I know

My name is Simone & I get asked how to spell it sometimes

I don't think she'll hate you for it, it's a lovely name. Even if you didn't spell it the traditional way, would you spell it Ashlyn, Ashlynne, Ashlin? You'd still have to spell it out anyway, so I think it's great you've kept the traditional spelling!

I never have to spell my name (Andrea), my DH is Keiran, and we have seen so many variations it is not funny.
When naming DD we fell in love with the name Elise, when we looked at spellings there were just so many. We really wanted her to have Elly as a nn so we went with the spelling Ellyse. There were so many different waysto spell it that I figured she would be spelling it out anyway. Since she has been born we have met people with the same name spelt Elise, Elice, Elyse, Elyce, then there is also Allyse, whish is the way her name is pronounced by most people anyway
DS is Ashton and I haven't had to spell it yet.

mmmmm....half and half. I have a 'Jack' (no problems there), a 'Laura' (no problems there) a 'Madelyn' (heaps of problems - either Madeleine or Madeline) and 'Harrison' - no problems when his name is spelt in full, but we call him 'Harri', and most people spell it 'Harry'.

Have always had to spell Caelan for people since we used the gaelic spelling, but right from the word go I have just automatically spelt it out, have had heaps of practice with my maiden name as people don't remember their grammer from school and try and spell it wrong!
My name not so much, but hubby have ALWAYS had to spell it straight away. ILs decided to merge their names to get Romen and no-one has ever seen it that way so that always write Roman. Am in the habit of spelling our last name too as for some reason people think I say it with an F instead of a V!
I'm just used to it now and is the price to pay for having a unique name that follows very old traditional spellings.

I have had to spell my own name throughout my life, it's Joanne, but there are so many variants that I'm always saying no hyphen, double "n" and "e"

Sometimes I think I would have prefered to be Joanna so there wasn't as much room for error.
I've never had to spell Jack for anyone, nor Lucy (though I've had one person ask how to spell Lucinda), but people come unstuck with Mabel all the time. I guess because it rhymes wth "table" so people are always spelling it Mable

I've also seen it written down as Maybell

I have never had to spell out my first name (although my Middle Name Claire gets spelled as people assume Clare).
DH's name is never spelled either (his middle name is as it is Kristian which he HATES... always says "why couldn't mum have used a C").
Both Boys have names that are also always correct

.
This is good as our Surname ALWAYS has to be done (as did my maiden name).

I have always had to spell my name, due to a few diff ways to spell it. Zoe. but i also use the two dots over the e, as it is on birth certificate which can be confusing for some.
DH is the same, Sean, always spelling it.
DS is Rory, only odd occasion do i have to spell it, i have to correct people more than spelling as they say "corey"?
DD is the same i am always spelling it, Abbie, and asked if its short for abigail etc... No thats her name "Abbie"!!
and our surname is simply, 5 letters long, plain, very common surname but i am always spelling it!!!!

I have always had to spell my first name. I used to have to spell my maiden name and even though i have quite a common surname now there are a couple of ways to spell it, so occasionally need to spell that too.
Jackson i don't think i have ever had to spell out. Riley needs to spelt occasionally and i almost always have to spell Annaliese.
There are so many variations in spelling nowadays even in very common names so i wouldn't be surprised if having to spell out names becomes the norm.

I never knew there was so many ways to spell Michelle!!
My sons name I usually end up spelling, his name is Elijah. Most people get it right, some leave the H off the end. And with saying his name, some use the "harsh" J (eliJar) some the zz sound (the way I do, eli zhar) and others use the silent J! lol Eli- ah

Doesn't worry me cos he answers to them all!

I have always had to spell my name for people. My name is Ciara pronounced "keir - ah" not only do I have to spell it for people but I am frequently told I am saying my name wrong by others.
My husband's name is also a bit different so we chose to call our son Kaidyn - I have to spell this all the time but I like the fact that it is different. With two strange names for parents I thought he might feel left out named John or Jim!
