Hi,
I'm new to EB and my baby (Jack) is 8 months old. He has/had reflux and now that I am starting him on solids he is showing signs of great food intolerances. He's been eating since 6 months and can't have rice cereal, banana, apple, sweet potato, potato, peas, corn, carrot, oatmeal porridge, rusks and broccoli (he vomits and/or gets welts on his cheeks or spots on his bottom) BUT he can have pumpkin and zucchini. Does anyone out there know anything about reflux and food intolerance and can you suggest what I can introduce to him? He's got 4 teeth and chews everything.

I have a pamhlet and it says introducing solids to a potentially allergic baby. Maybe you could ask your health nurse for a copy.
I would also suggest that if you havent already that you see a doctor or a dietian. They may be able to help.

Good luck.

I would be going to your Dr or the MACH nurses straight away. There is blood testing that can be done for allergies and good resources around for food intolerances. I think it is important to seek good medical help with these problems.

Reflux and vomitting are a symptom of food intollerances, but they can also indicate other problems and it is best to get a doctor to check the baby over first.

So, I would take him to see your doctor straight away to have him checked for any physical problems or allergies. Allergies can be detected via blood tests etc.

Food intollerances can only be determined by sticking to a medically sound elimination diet such as the Failsafe diet which was devised by dieticians at the RPA Allergy Clinic. There is one dietician in the ACT who supports the diet and I can give you her name if you want.

This website explains food intollerances very well:

www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info

If you are breastfeeding and suspect food intollerances in your baby, you will need to modify your diet as food chemicals do come through the breastmilk. Breastmilk can either filter out chemicals or concentrate them.

If you are feeding your baby formula and suspect food intollerances you will need to experiment with different types of formula eg soy, goats milk or failing that the desperation measure is to get a script for neocate.

Can you tell that I have been down this path a few times?????????????

Foods that are suitable for a baby being introduced to solids that don't generally cause a problem include:

Preservative free bread
Bellamys Organic Rice Cereal
Potatoes (large white) peeled thickly
Swedes
Brussell Sprouts
Celery
Leeks
Shallotts
Chokoes
Beans
Rice
Rolled Oats
Pears (very ripe) peeled thickly

Hope this helps

I would also suggest going through your mach nurse and getting an appointment with a nutritionist. I have gone through this in the past and seen nutritionists both at the hospital and ata clinic in Tuggeranong. They were really helpful in the area of intolerances.
Karen, I personally have stayed away from bellamy's organic rice cereal as it says on the box that it may contain traces of gluten/wheat (can't remember what exactly). There are other organic rice cereals available through health stores (like hepworths) but these need to be cooked up. It is a pity bellamy's can't make it a gluten free product (well, this was when I checked last about 3 months ago anyway.)

hello
thank you so much for your replies. the websites were good - they have thrown a few answers at me. Jack was caesarian and I take QVAR for my asthma and both relate to reflux. I can't believe I didn't get online earlier. I will also take Jack to MACH (so far they have not helped because he does not cry - seriously. he doesn't cry not even when he is tired!) and to a physio or naturopath. A dietitian would help too.
Thanks so much everyone.
Madge
and Jack thanks you too!
