We have chosen Slayter Byron B...... What do you think??
clumpy
07/04/2008, 11:04 AM
What do I
really think?
Slayter is absolutely horrible. Sorry. Apart from the pointless Y which turns it from just another surname-as-first-name into SLAYter (because it's nice to have a
murder word in your name...?!), slaters are
creepy little insects, which isn't the best association for your child!
I'm really sorry but I can't find a single nice thing to say about it except that at least it's not for a girl.
However, Byron is quite nice. I would much prefer this.

Well, I think your choice of a roll eyes emoticon is appropriate.
I don't like it at all.

Sorry, but I don't really like Slayter either.
But, having said that, not many people we spoke to liked OUR choice of name for our little girl (Katherine) when we first picked it. My mum and MIL both said it was too stuffy and formal, and even friends (who are naming their children trendy names with superfluous Y's etc) commented that it was so old fashioned. But we stuck with it and you know what, everybody accepted it and we haven't had one negative comment about it since her birth.
So if you and your partner really like Slayter then use it, people will get over it. I can think of worse names (I once knew a brothers named Wayne and Joe King, and a girl named Ophelia D*ck - I kid you not!).

by the looks this is going to be another topic like the one we had about the name HUNTER....
i imediately thought of the actor christian slater....
my advice is if you like the name bugger what anyody else has to say but you need to remember about the possible teasing he may receive when he gets older.

I don't like Slayter either, but as others have said, Byron is nice, maybe if you really like Slayter, have Byron Slayter instead... it seems to flow better too.

I really dislike Slayter. Byron is ok though. If you must use Slayter have it as the middle name have Byron as the first name.

So why ask?

I think it would be nicer without the Y in it.
If you take Kelly Slater and Byron Bay into account then it isnt too bad.
Still NMS though, but good luck.

07/04/2008, 01:35 PM
I wouldn't use it,
Slater is doable but with the y it just looks really made-up and kinda trashy IMO

You asked for our opinions, so be prepared for negative comments.
There are many perfectly usable names out there but I'm afraid to say that this one is terrible. Sorry.

as others have said, it is YOUR child and YOUR decision, but seeing as though you have asked, Byron is lovely, and slayter is nice in reference to kelly slater (without the y) but thats jusy my opinion....

OP - Slayter isnt a name that i would personally choose, but i wouldnt say i hate it either... i wouldntve even associated it with SLAY as others have, after time i probably wouldve noticed the bug association with it, but other than that i dont really see anything wrong with the name, and if you love it then go for it!!

My gf's little boy is called Slater (I much prefer that spelling - Slayter looks made up).
I had never heard of the name before (except for Kelly Slater) and I had never heard of slater bugs either, until he was born and named and then everyone kept going on about slater bugs.
I just found this about the name Slater on thinkbabynames.com
The boy's name Slater \s-la-ter\ is of Old English origin, and its meaning is "hewer of slates". Occupational surname for those who installed slate roofs. Actor Christian Slater.

If you have decided to use it, my only opinion would be to spell it Slater, as others have said. It is a unique name as is, so I see no need to spell it differently.

Now thats a bit overly mean, specially from a
moderator to add a bug picture in here to say that's what the name that OP likes, makes them think of!!
Opinons is one thing BUT that.. that's just plain nasty to me!

Mean? Nasty?
Well, I guess it depends on how you're choosing to interpret my reply - contrary to popular belief, Moderators are entitled to give their honest opinions here, too, and that is mine. Plain and simple with
no malice intended, so please don't over dramatise or read into it.
FWIW a) the

was about the bugs, not necessarily the name itself, and b) in my mind, perhaps the OP doesn't know about these little bugs, therefore, my reply might help her.
Personally, I'd definitely want to know if there was any negative associations with the name I had chosen for my child.

I not once *thought* you cant voice your opinion just beacause your a moderator, I was just voiceing (sp?) my opinion that I thought you going to the trouble of posting photo's of the image in your head at the time was a bit OTT for here.
I spose I've just had enough of reading alot of negative thoughts on names from the same posters in the name thread of this forum, sorry if I seem to be going a little too OTT myself, maybe I'll blame my hormones, I never have but I think that might be the case now, so enough said on my behalf in here, I don't want it to go on forever so enough said on my part now.
Cheers.

Byron, is a great name. As for Slayter, well it has all been said already, and I have to agree with the bugs and killer connotations.
I know a Slater, it's actually his middle name and he prefers it over his first name. Everyone knows him as Slater and it really suits.
My first thoughts were of Kelly Slater, and there's nothing wrong with that!!

Funnily enough I went to lunch today with a mum who has a little boy called Slater but I'm not sure how it was spelt. It is certainly a name that stands out from the crowd. I like Byron better as a first name as I prefer more traditional names.
I would listen to what others have to say with broad shoulders and not take it to heart. Just consider it a reflection of their complete lack of a delicate social skill called tact.

Geez some people are rude.
Why?
The OP asked for people's opinions. We gave them.
Our opinions are obviously irrelevant anyway, since she still intends to use the name, so this whole thread is pointless.

Some people are able to give an opinion without being rude. Others are not. There are plenty of examples in the baby name threads where people say, "not my style or have you thought about, or I prefer". etc. Saying it is hideous just shows a lack of manners on your behalf. The OP has responded in such a manner because she is obviously feeling hurt and defensive.

may i ask then if you were already set to call your baby Slayter and loved the name, why ask the ladies here what they thought if you dont want to hear what they thought?
i agree some opinions were said unkindly but each person expresses themselves differently.
i feel sorry for you that you have received negative replies but you did ask opinions and indeed you received them. i do hope nothing has changed your mind about the name as it is entirely your own personal decision

Ick. I have to say it's one of the worst names I have heard.
As much as I hate the 'surname as a first name' trend anyway, at least some of the others such as Cooper, Hunter blah blah blah, don't SOUND as terrible as Slayter. I especially hate it with the unneccesary ugly looking Y in the middle of it.
It's not only a harsh sounding name which will be butchered by many Australians to sound overly occa and bogan, but a slater is an INSECT.

Sorry not a fan either. I immediately thought of the bugs too (which I quite like actually but personally wouldn't want that as the first image that came to peoples heads in relation to my child)
I do tend to like more traditional names though

I'd go with Slater too as it completely changes the name (in my view) from SLAY-ter (abit murderous) to connecting to some spunky sports stars! I know slater bugs but they aren't the first thing I think of when I hear Slater.

28/04/2008, 04:14 PM
Not a fan at all. If you have your heart set, please at least spell it Slater. That may partially salvage the name. I hate how people throw a random 'y' into a name to make it 'youneek'.
You asked for opinions, you got them. People will be thinking the same thing when you tell them your sons name in the real world, they just won't say it to your face.

I love different names, however I personally wouldn't choose this spelling. Its your choice how you name your child despite what others think, besides, take a look at other people's choices. When you ask for people's opinions though you do have to expect negative outcomes and be prepared to accept the many varied ways people express these opinions. Also consider that most of us on here are very hormonal and have good and bad days
If you are happy with your choice then ignore the opinion of others and just be happy with your decision and focus your attention on making sure your ready for your little boys arrival. What people think of a name isn't very important.
Good luck with your little one

You could always use the nickname "Butchie Boy".
Definitely not a name I would ever use - why name a child after a crawling insect?
