Personally I adore the name but my partner is not too keen at this stage. WDYT of it? Does the Kinks 1970's classic about a transvestite come to mind every time you hear it? (love that song btw)

Yes, I think of the song but I don't like the name to begin with.

Agree with the PP. & then I start to think of that other song, sung much later called "Hey Mona" by Craig McLachlan. Sorry

I like it, but I must admit I am hearing it alot these days. I know 3 little Lola's under 4.
I have a cousin named "Leela" which I LOVE (she is 24 and I have never met another!)
Goodluck with whatever you choose!

I think people can see past the song meaning and see it as a name these days. There is a little girl named LOLA at our mothers group. I never spare it a thought.

My niece's name is Lola, and I love it. It suits her so much, I think it's a girly, cheeky name.
It also reminds me of Copacobana, "Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl..."

I'm not a fan of it. It's a bit of a mouthful to me. I also think of the song, though, people would get past that.

Sorry, not my style. Besides the two songs, it also sounds to me like a stripper or porn star name...
Sorry

That song doesn't cross my mind. i don't like it I guess.
Lola is lovely.
There is a girl at my daughter's creche named Lila pronounced Lee-la. She's a darling.

Yep, I do think of the song....
Similar names:
Coco
Layla/Laila (again a song title)
Leela (as PP suggested)
Lila (which I

and would pronounce Lie-La) - although again a song (can't remember who sings it though?)
ETA: Dang it... now I have the Copacabana in my head

.... her name was Lola, she was a showgirl (that's all I know!!)

I love love love the name!

I think it's very feminine and girly (but I can also see a classy lady with it)...was top of my name list if this bub was a girl...my DH couldn't get past the song though either.
Just think, people wouldn't
always think of the song when seeing/thinking about actual people with the name...they would soon associate different things with the person. Good luck!

ETA - I'm not a huge fan of Leela or Lila but I also like Layla

A few years ago i would have thought yuck. But with watching Charlie and Lola (cartoon show) about 1,000,000 times with the kids - it's a name I expect to hear around more and more
BYW - Lola in the cartoon is a real little character - I like girls with a bit of spunk!!!

Wow- thanks for the input everyone. You've given me some food for though that's for sure! I forgot about charlie and Lola

. I do agree with pp's who said it's a cheeky yet strong name, however I get the feeling it has other connotations to the older generation. I asked my mum about it and she said it was the name of a famous prostitute and that it had sexual connotations. On top of these connotations it reminds her of the name "Lolita", since it is a similar sounding name.
Thanks for the suggestions Joanna, I love lila as an alternative.
Also on the short list are Lowanna and Eden.

I asked the same question a couple of years ago. We still used it as a middle name, after my husband's grandmother. It's a lovely name.

Gorgeous name, I don't care about the connotations. And I just ADORE Lola in Charlie & Lola - she's ace.
DH vetoed it for us though... because of the song.
