Hi There,
We are due in 6 weeks time - and have a girls name picked however both DH and myself are tossing up between Lachlan and Sinclair if we have another boy. We already have a son called Hamish.
Whilst I love the name Lachlan (nn Lachie) I am concerned it may be too popular (due to the Top 10 list even though we don't have any Lachlans in our circle of friends). Sinclair I love in full though not keen on the nn Sin/Sinny...
I have two questions which I'd love your input:
1. Which do you prefer Lachlan or Sinclair?
2. Do you know any Sinclairs and if so, what are their nicknames?
Thanks so much for your time

Lachlan is far better but IMO I think Sinclair is awful (sorry). I think he would end up with clair as a teasing name. But I love Fred and think we will call #3 this if it is a boy so what do I know?

I prefer Sinclair. Too many Lachlan's these days although it is a nice name. I had a neighbour who was called Sinclair

I think you have to go with what rolls off the tongue for you and hubby. As a lover of more unusual names I like Sinclair however do you feel comfortable if you had to call out to your child in a playground with that name. Does Lachlan sound more comfortable.
Would people think Sinclair was too uppity or Lachlan too popular. Who cares. When it comes down to it you know the child has to live with the name for the rest of his life so do what you think is best for him and for yourselves.
Best of luck and my good wishes for your forthcoming child.

I really like Lachlan, I would have said it is a lot less common now than it was a few years ago. And besides, there were only 40 children born in Victoria with DDs name the year she was born, and one of them is at the same school - so you can't necessarily avoid the couple in a class even with a less common name.
Sinclair is nice in it's full form, but the abbreviations sin, sinc, clair all spell trouble to me.

I like the name Lachlan alot more than Sinclair.
I've never met any Sinclairs at all. The only thought when I read the name was I think it was the name of a dinosaur in a 90's tv show called Dinosaurs.
Just go with the one you like, your child will grow to suit it and everyone will say they can't imagine him being anything else even if they originally hated it.

Yep, I agree with this. But then again, I love names that aren't too common.

I love Lachlan. I don't know any Lachlan's or any Sinclair's. I don't really like Sinclair though and the 'Clair' bit at the end makes it sound at bit girly IMO sorry.

Lachlan without a doubt. Not a fan of Sinclair at all, sorry.
The popularity doesn't bother me (that's probably obvious as I have a Joshua

)

Hmmm, I actually don't mind Sinclair. I don't know anyone by that name though, so if it's uniqueness that you're after, then I think that would be the name to go for. I do love the name Lachlan if I, personally, had to choose. Best of luck.

I prefer Lachlan, although I am not a great fan of this name.
Sinclair is too surname-ish for me, I knew someone with this as a last name and that is it.

i prefer lachlan, it is a lovely strong name and goes well with hamish. i havn't heard of any first name sinclairs but certainly surnames. he might get sinkers, or clairy or sincs... i think wait until he is born and then u will def know which one he looks like.

I love the name Lachlan (I have one of my very own)
A nn for Sinclair could possibly be Sin (which to me would be an awful nn for obvious reasons). Not a fan of this name tho, it sounds more like a surname than a first name IMO!

My opinion is Lachlan is nicer as I like popular common names so Sinclair is not really what I would go for etc.
However I think Hamish and Sinclair go better together than Hamish and Lachlan.

Definitely Lachlan for me. Sinclair isn't a name that I personally like. I love the name Hamish by the way.

I much prefer Sinclair....Lachlan to me is way too common.
I knew a Sinclair all through High school and he never had a nickname...Everyone knew him as Sinclair.
In terms of 'roll-off-the-tongue' to me Lacklan are two words mashed togeather, where as to me Sinclair sounds like a two-sylable word (a subtle difference) and so to me i'd much prefer yelling out 'Sinclair' in the middle of the shopping centre and have my child know i was yelling at him, than have to yell out "Lachlan/Lochy" and have like 5 children turn to me...

Lachlan is nicer. I think all the last names as first name thing that is so popular right now for girls and boys is going to really date them as children of this era.

Wow thanks everyone for your responses - what a great help you have been. Generally you have confirmed my thoughts and I'm sure Lachlan will be the choice should this be a boy....DH is happy with this. Now it's just a matter of 4 weeks or so 'til we find out....perhaps it will be a girl?!?

Lachlan is really nice for a boy. Not too fussed on Sinclair

I like Sinclair because I think Lachlan is too common at the moment (Sorry if I offend anyone).
Although I cant talk. I had only one name picked for years, and a friend named her baby that so I opted for something else. Then when Number 2 came along, we were going to use it anyway (after disscussing it with our friends who were fine with it) Anyway, he arrived and we felt we couldn't steel it from our friends, so we named him something else. 1 week later- we changed it to our original favourite, as what we picked didn't suit us or him. Now we are all happy.
I guess what I am trying to say is- go with your gut, no matter what anyone else thinks...You are ther one who has to say it 100 times a day, so only you and your partner need to be happy with it! Goodluck

I like the name Lachlan but there are a fair few of them about. Don't really like Sinclair. Like the suggestion of Alistair or maybe Cameron.

Definately Lachlan
My ds is in pre-prep and he is the only Lachlan. My dd has a little boy in her class and his name is Lachlan too. Even though we hear it is popular we haven't come across that many at all.
Goodluck in deciding.
