Hi everyone, I'm 31 weeks pregnant and DH and I have been having trouble both agreeing on a boys name, but have finally found one we like! We have our girl name sorted grin.gif

We both like the name Carlin, for a boy. After analysing it to death, I'm now wondering if people would shorten it to 'Carl' which I am not so keen on at all. What do you think? Would love your input original.gif

If you don't shorten it, others may not either. My dad threatened to shorten my eldest's name and call her "lizzy" however both my parents and all our friends call her Elizabeth simply because we do. She doesn't answer to anything else!

IMO you can't really stop people from shortening your child's name, but if you set the example and only ever call/refer to them by their full name then others will too.

What a cool name. I find that pretty much every name gets reduced to a nickname and I think that people would shorten it to Carl. DH and I have cut names from our lists simply because we didn't like what they would be shortened to and it's always a shame to think about giving up a name you both like. Goodness knows it can be hard to agree on one at times laugh.gif

Having said that, I have a few friends who tell people they don't shorten their own/child's name and we're all used to calling them by their full name.

I went to school with a guy called Carlin. He never got his named shorted.
If right from the start you let ppl know that its his name and it doesnt get shortened then everyone will just follow..

a few ppl have tried to shorten Kaylans name to Kay. I pulled them up straight away. Her name isnt made up from ppl called Kay etc, so it isnt to be shortened to Kay. Everyone has caught on and it doesnt happen any more! The only nns she ends up with are ones that include her middle names!

TBH I think it'd eventually get shortened to "Carl".. blush.gif

We know a Carlyn who gets 'Arly' but she's a girl... I kinda see it as a girls name only after meeting her.

Thanks for the input so far everyone original.gif As for it sounding a bit like a girls name, I only just thought of that today. I have a cousin called Carli and I am now wondering if it's too similar? Oh decisions decisions!! This is too hard!

I don't think it would get shortned to Carl. I know a Karlyn but she is a girl, no nn.

I was just thinking that it will probably be often mis-heard as Carli/Carly.

I'm not too keen on Carlin but don't mind the nickname Karl/Carl.
