Hi girls,

I've just been informed that my partner maybe taking a posting to Canberra probably mid/late this year with the defence force & I have no idea what I'm going to be in for.

My partner has family situated in Canberra (Chisholm)which is good but, I have no idea what to expect housing wise/work wise or child care wise.

Can anyone give me a good neighbourhood that would suit a young military family?

Thanks

Hi,

Housing-wise it depends what you can afford. Inner North suburbs (Campbell, Ainslie etc) are all close to Duntroon, but they're expensive. Over the border is Queanbeyan, which is cheaper and still close to Duntroon.
Weston Creek is mid-priced and not too far from Civic and Duntroon.

Childcare places seem to be very scarce, especially for under 3's.

good luck!

The defence force has married quarters in most suburbs. As a defence member (soon to be ex defence member yay), we lived in Calwell and Banks. There were limited married quarters available when we moved so we only got a choice of 2 houses, so we took the nicest. There are alot of married quarters in Jerrabomberra. If you are army, you could get a married quarter at duntroon. IF you get Rental Assistance, I would recommend Jerrabomberra for a good neighbourhood.

There is a defence childcare centre at Russell. I would recommend calling now and putting your name down on the list even if you don't have your posting yet. There is a huge waiting list. My eldest DD went there and she loved it. The childcare centre name is Russell Hill Early Childhood Centre. I hope this helps.
