Hi, I need some feedback..

I love the name Claudia but from what I have found on the net it means either "lame" or "disabled".

Would you still use this name knowing it meant the above?
KaLeXa
I know a little girl called Claudia Rose and she is extremely hypo but very adorable!! wub.gif
Lambie
I considered Claudia, but couldn't do it knowing the meaning sad.gif alot of people aren't fussed, but I like to have pleasant, or at least not unpleasant! meanings.
Melissa4444
I think it's lovely, and in all honesty, wouldn't care about the meaning.

Mine means Honeybee. I'm very, very allergic. tongue.gif
~Bloom~
If I really, really, really loved the name then maybe I would use it, but if there was a name that I liked just as much then I would go for the other one instead.

What a shame such a beautiful name has such a terrible meaning!

But... if you love it use it! How many people's names do you know the meaning of?????
missxanadu
I don't know why the textbook meanings matter at all to people. Not many people really care what their name means do they? It's a topic in primary school, when you realise someone years and years ago prescribed a meaning to your name, but life goes on right?!
If you spell it Clawdia does it have the same meaning tongue.gif
Misette
Thanks heaps for all your thoughts!

I absolutley love the name and am a little unsure of using it now given its meaning. As for spelling it different, from what I have seen it still attracts the same meaning.

I must say that I'm glad I didn't receive a flat out don't use it response tongue.gif

I want something that is kind of classic yet not top 10. So if any one has any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them.

Our surname is very common and bland so anything will go with it..
fifi-trixibelle
I really like it and if I still liked it at atime when I needed to use a girl's name I would use it regardless of it's meaning. I love Claudette too.
~ZT~
Love it biggrin.gif

I think it's a beautiful name, but for me, the meaning is important so I don't know that I would use it. It's hard though because it is such a lovely name.
clumpy
I think it's gorgeous and (some might be surprised to know!) I don't care too much about odd meanings.

Here are some alternatives with similar sound/feel. None was in the top 100 last year.

Lydia
Lucinda
Clementine
Genevieve
Philippa
Caroline

I LOVE Claudia for a name and we would've have used it if DH liked it too, but i think its a very pretty name regardless of its meaning. I also know a Claudia and she is a real sweetie

Err..considering that there are members with at least 3 of those names (that I can think of at the top of my head) on EB...

I like the idea of Claudia, it is my sister's fav name. And the meaning would not deter me.....I do find however that the pronounciation may be a little harsh, CLAW-dia, or even the alternative CLOW-dia.

But all the Claudia's I know are gorgeous.

I love Clumpy's suggestions. I like classical names, so can I add.....

Good luck!

I love the name! I wouldn't worry what the meaning is!

I don't mind the names Caroline and Lucinda original.gif

I think most people when they hear the name Claudia would relate it to Claudia Schiffer....which isn't a bad thing. But it could be shorten to 'Claud's'.

I like the name and only know one Claudia around here.
JustLynn
I love it, both major pronunciations too.

I don't give a toss about the meaning.

I love all the names on clumpy's list too. None of them are discusting, or even disgusting, to my taste.
*rose*
LOVE IT!!! It is second on my list after Ruby original.gif Who cares about the meaning? I don't know it and am too lazy to look it up but would still yse it. tongue.gif
mrsdrano
I love it but wouldn't use it for that reason. Same with Cecilia - gorgeous but means "blind" so neither of them made it to my lists.

Good luck!

Im not really into name meanings, so I would go for it. I love the name as well, but pronounced the german way, Cloud-ia.
Luckymay
I love the name Claudia - it is actually #2 on my list for our next bub if a girl. However, I hadn't got as far as looking at the meaning. I have to say, that does put me off it.

I equally love the name Claudine. Would you consider that?
saudade
I love the name and I would not let the meaning behind this particular one bother me too much.
Mulan
What about the fact that is the name of some very successful and beautiful women
Claudia Schiffer
Claudia Black (Aussie actress)
Claudia Karvan (Aussie actress)

I wub.gif Claudia. Unfortunately my cousin has used it for her little girl so it's off my list cry1.gif.

I love it - it was in my top five. I also love the other names suggested. Josephine is a particular favourite.

I must say, in my experience the negative reactions on EB are as instructive as the positive ones, IYKWIM!

I love it. Surprised at the meaning though! I don't think it would put me off though. I love the nickname Claude...

Love Claudia. I wonder if the 'lame' associations come from Emperor Claudius who suffered from a number of afflictions??

I also love Claudine. It is in our top five girls' names
~*Lou*~
I love the name. I may be baised tongue.gif

I actually didn't look up the meaning until after DD was born, but shrug.gif I don't regret it now.

Yes that's correct. Which gets me thinking that surely that name had a different meaning previous to Emperor Claudius tongue.gif Not that I can find it on the www!

I really love the name and I have decided that it's going to stay on my top 3 list original.gif

Thanks ladies!
hadfield
I also think the name is beautiful.

What an unfortunate meaning, what type of afflictions did Claudius have I wonder!
ladyluck
I dont really like it...sorry. blush.gif

Its pretty. Personally, it reminds me of Claudia from the Baby Sitters Club, but its kinda sad that Im admitting to reading those books... (I guess its ok since I was 10-13 at the time) Anyway, she was my favourite character so thumbs up from me original.gif
WhatWouldBuffyDo
I love it. Stuff the "meaning". Claudia would have been DD's name but DH decided to veto at approx 35 weeks sad.gif . I do love DD's name anyway though. The name she has now was our 2nd choice.
Jaffacakes
I quite like the name Claudia (there is a little poppet with this name at DDs daycare) and if I really loved it wouldn't care too much about the meaning.

Some of the previous suggestions are gorgeous (including many from my list, such as DDs name Lydia wub.gif )

I say go for what you love, I mean how many people know the meaning of their own name (I didn't until recently) Besides many popular names have less than pleasant meanings (e.g. Mary = bitter, Cameron = crooked nose etc.), doesnt make these names any less pleasant IYKWIM

Hello,
I named my daughter Claudia Rose, she is ten now and is a little upset that most search meanings bring up lame. It has taken a lot of discussion with her as to the other decisions that you make when deciding upon a name. We wanted something that went with our last name, wasn't very popular, easy to spell, something that we loved and also very pretty and girly. And after spending hours on the internet looking for a nice meaning I have come up with:
- the welsh form of Claudia, (Gwladus) that means royalty (princess)
-The gens Claudia which was one of the oldest families in ancient Rome were regularly leaders of the city and empire.
She liked the idea of being a princess and a leader so I am happy with that.....also everybody always comments on how beautiful her name is.

Thanks and hope this helps.

I must admit my first thought was Claudia from the BabySitters Club books too. blush.gif I love the name, and I remember Claudia from the books as being the "fashionable" one.

I think that meanings and tradition are important, but who says you can't find a Claudia you admire, and tell her the meaning YOU see in her name. wink.gif
~Kathryn~
I think it's pretty!

The worst baby name meaning I ever found was one that meant "To be fed to the wolves" LOL

I can't remember the name, but I remember it was some obscure but pretty sounding name.

I know this is a late response but I wanted to add that Claudia is my #1 choice if I have a girl and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that DH will agree to it (so far he's given a positive response but it's not set in stone). I have thought about the meaning and decided that it doesn't matter as much as having a beautiful name. I've had my heart set on Claudia as my first daughter for about 6 or 7 years. All the Claudias I've known or heard of are pretty fabulous (including Claudia Kishi from the BSC!).

Claudia is a Roman name. Yes, it does mean lame but that is because the first person with that name was probably lame or had some kind of affliction. The original Claudius was around in around 500BC.

Here is a great page on the gens Claudius

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudius_(gens)

It is a name with a fabulous history. And one of my favourite Roman women was called Claudia. She was the sister of Publius Claudius (or Clodius) and was made out by Cicero to be a complete strumpet. I think Cicero was a bit of a d*ck, so I prefer to think of her as a very alluring, facinating woman who could charm men very easily.

By the way, Cicero means chick pea and Caesar means good head of hair. These meanings never stopped them from being great

Claudia is a beautiful name - I'd still use it. We have a close family friend with a DD named Claudia. She gets Claudi for short.
puddingpie
I would definitely use it. It is a gorgeous name. And who knows what the meaning is anyway??

I recently worked with a Claudia who is German and she pronounced it "Clowdia" (although it is spelled Claudia) which I think is really pretty too.

She can be Claud or Claudi for short. (I also have a friend called Claudine, if that takes your fancy? Her parents are French.)

I adore the German pronounciation wub.gif If I could guarentee this pronounciation I would definatelly use the name. Not too keen on the harsher pronounciation blush.gif

Sorry, I really don't like the name Claudia...even more so now that I know the meaning.
