Has anyone had a planned caesarian at canberra hospital?

Just reading this article in the Canberra times about someone waiting in Day Surgery for a D&C with women awaiting a caesarian and wondering if it's actually the norm for a woman having a caesar to be in the day surgery waiting room??

Hi Nut,

I've had a planned c/s a TCH and yes, you do report to day surgery first mellow.gif They changed this not long before I had Xavier (in July 07). Before, women waiting for a c/s went to maternity and were taken to the operating theatre, but now, you have to report to day surgery at a particular time (you have pre-op 1 week before and are given all the details) and you go from there - sign forms, get prepped, wheeled into surgery and after bubs is born, you get wheeled to your room in maternity original.gif
I have to admit, I've had 2 c/s at JJMH and 1 c/s at TCH and the c/s at TCH was the best out of the 3!!

There you go. I thought you waited in antenatal... I know that's how it use to be but I had no idea it changed.

Though we never had a planned C/S in the waiting room of DSU where I used to work, it would not be that unsuitable, in terms of all the same pre-op things the midwives do down in the Maternity unit before transfer to the OT, they can do in DSU, or once in OT.

I question the suitability of the placement of anybody facing a M/C, D&C, stillbirth, or termination, within range of women experiencing positive PG or birth related care. Having patients waiting for a D&C (for M/C) in the same areas as any PG women, pre or post C/S, or even in the Maternity Unit, was the norm in our hospital, due to it being a public hospital, and also that the midwives are trained to care for all women in any of these positions.

Unfortunately, it happens and in some circumstances, it may be unavoidable, or the alternative is unsuitable anyways. I cannot speak for what goes on in the hospitals here, and am interested to hear someone else's first hand experience/ opinion.

Yes that's kind of what I thought.

Though neither of my D&C's involved my being in a waiting room with anyone other than older people having lazer eye surgery it doesn't seem that unusual, as hard as it would be.

I had to sit in a waiting room with pregnant women when undergoing fertility treatment which is right up there. As much as I feel for the couple in question I do have some issues with the way the article was written.

Oh, I work in Recovery as RN, BTW. Not DSU, like that post above read!

I too had a c/s at TCH in 2004. I ad a very good experience there and would definitely go back there.

My c/s was planned as I had a stillborn a few years before in Sydney and I didn't want to go through all the anxiety I went through previously. I actually like the idea of checking into Day Surgery as being as stressed as I was it was very hard being prepared to have a child after loosing a child where there are noises etc of other babies and wondering if everything was going to be ok at the other end.

I do have to agree though, that there could be a risk and not having the appropriate staff around but you would like to think that this has been thought of and everything is fine.

The midwives would still be in the OT for the C/S and to attend the birth. The only other thing is if you were admitted via the Maternity unit pre-op, they may do some monitoring of the baby pre-OT (not sure, as I've never made it to my scheduled C/S day/time!)...
