The top 10 boy and girl names in the ACT from last year are now online.

We achieved one of our aims in not picking a popular one - Alexandra is on the list but at the bottom and way back in 1991. Unfortunately one of our next favourite girl names appears to be rocketing back *up* the charts sad.gif. Boy names I didn't really look at - they have never been our strong point original.gif.

oh no! Sophie and Emma are both right up there (and in EVERY year! hee hee.

Oh well, we didn't know it was "in vogue!" We just liked it. Obviously we have great taste... hahahahah!

wink.gif Ryan's at number 7. I guess if I hold him back a year from starting school there will be a lot in his class. What am I saying? He's always had at least one other Ryan in his daycare group. My poor lad is always known as Ryan D.

But I DELIBERATELY chose a common name for him. Something about having an unusal surname made me want to save him from having to spell both of his names, his whole life!

Bummer, all the names I had chosen are on all the
lists!

As a teacher I wanted a traditional name with no
unusual spellings, but I also didn't want to have my
child share their name with five other kids in their
class. About 6 years ago I taught a kindergarten class
and had 2 Emilys in my class and there were another 8
in the other Kindergarten classes at the same
school.... not to mention how many there were in older
grades and coming up through the preschool. Its a
very pretty name, but the kids all got sick of being
called Emily S etc (BTW I didn't choose 'Emily', but I
can see the same prob happening with the names I have
chosen).

Hmmm Maybe I should take another look at those baby
name books original.gif

I reckon that if you want your baby to have a common (as in everyone will know ho to spell) but not common name, then you should give them a name that is common in OUR generation... eg:

Boy: David
Girl: Catherine

Almost every second bloke I know is a Dave and now there are hardly any baby boys named that. And in my mum's group, there are 4 Cathy/Kathy/Kaths.

Even though my DS's name is on one of the earlier lists, I'm glad for his sake that his name is not on the recent ones. I wanted a name for him that was going to be known how to be spelt and pronounced yet not one that would be common.

Ever since he was born I have checked out the weekly baby announcements in the Sunday Times (out of curiosity as we get it delivered) and I'm relieved to report that in all this time I've only ever seen one with the same name as his.

Cheers,
Helen.

ROFL as opposed to Ryan James (eh Karen wink.gif).

My girl's name choice was Ebony Charlotte. At the time many people criticised the "Charlotte" as so old fashioned and awful. I bet it's on the 2005 list!

Well I must say I am suprised that Madison was not on the list as it seems every second child I meet is called that. Maybe is just because we have a Madison that I notice when there are others called the same.
And there was no mention of the name Alec on any of the lists, which is good as we wanted a name that was not so common, but also not too strange (if you know what I mean), or spelt in some weird way.

Oh Dear! blush.gif I didn't think Sophie was such a popular name. I hadn't really heard of too many more of them. In fact I only knew of Blissful's Sophie before having mine.

Mmmm - I haven't registered her birth yet (I am slack BDM sent us a letter yesterday to remind us!) so there is time to change it! LOL!!!

No Hamish, No Dylan.

Unsure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

I think no matter what name you choose, it has the potential to become popular. All it takes is a couple of people to l;ike and the name can spread like wild fire.

I know of 4 Lachlans born in 2002 all connected to us in some way eg. 1 family, another friend and another in-law etc.

we didn't know that ryan was as popular as it was (let alone ryan james LOL) but i don't mind too much - it's such a lovely name and quite frankly the only one we could agree on!!

emelia we chose as we wanted something uncommon but not too different. at dh's work there is an emelia, emily and amelie born within a few months of each other though original.gif

I think I have seen Harley in a 1920's list but it wasn't an Australian site. I am very glad that it hasn't made any lists and also hope that it never does. There was another Harley James born here about a year ago which is VERY disappointing to me. I also know that there is a 7 year old in Canberra somewhere as we heard him being told off in Queanbeyan once.

Thanks

I haven't come across another Delia anywhere! Unless you count Delia Smith English chef extraordinaire. Check her out here:
http://www.deliaonline.com/

Darcy is abit more popular have def. come across the name teaching etc. But again not very popular at all.

Just the way I like it really. I'm not into common names at all. So most of the names in the top 10 don't grab me at all, especially the boys names.

Rohan - Nicholas (aged 7) went to preschool with a Harley. This particular Harley lives in Wanniassa.

What can I say?? All my kids have common names. We thought that Charlotte was a really original uncommon name when we thought of it. She was one of 3 Charlotte's in a very short space in time in the premmie nursery, so I had an inkling that it was becoming very popular.

OMG Mands Rotfl, geeezzz some people can be idiots. I would be so tempted to smile sweetly and say "oh yes she was named after them"

There are a few Quinn's around and alot more Zoe's but we are not fazed original.gif If it had been up to Dh we would of had a "Mylene" and an "Etienne" instead. Not much chance of them making the top 10 list in the wonderful world of Oz!

I know which ones I prefer though Tounge1.gif
