Decorating Eggs Using Food Colouring

Materials Needed:
- Hard Boiled Eggs
- Food Colouring
- Vinegar

Instructions:

In a coffee cup, mix about 20 drops of food colouring with 1 teaspoon of vinegar. Add 1/2 cup hot water. Before you colour your eggs let the water cool to room temperature. If necessary you can add a bit more water. You want the coloring to completely cover the egg when put in the cup. Repeat the steps above to make different colors. Experiment with mixing colors. Mix red and blue to get purple, and mix red and yellow to make orange!

Gently lower eggs in the cup. The longer you leave the eggs in the dye, the darker the colours will be. Once the egg reaches the desired colour, remove from the cup with a spoon and pat dry with a paper towel.

To add designs to your coloured eggs try one of these ideas:

- For a tie dye effect, wrap rubber bands around the eggs before dying.
- Write your name or draw a picture on your eggs using light coloured wax crayons and then dye as usual.
- Place shaped stickers on your eggs before dying!
- Cut small strips of masking tape and stick on eggs before dying.
- For a marbled dye effect add 2tspn of olive oil to the dye before dipping the egg in.

After the eggs have dried you can give them a lovely sheen my rubbing a small amount of olive oil into the shell.

The end products are decorative and edible. You can also dye blown egg shells except they are not as robust for toddlers and preschoolers to work with!
