Hello everyone,

I thought we could start a list of all the places Brissie mums enjoy taking the kids for an outing - I know I could sure use some inspiration, it is hard to keep coming up with new ideas!

I will start with a couple below. Please everyone add your suggestions!!

P.S

I am relatively new to the board, so I apologise if this has been done recently.

Jo
Mummy to Isaac (4y)

Mt Cootha botanic gardens and lookout.

Southbank

Gold coast - broadbeach for the monorail, surfers for the atmosphere

Roma St Parklands

Jindalee Hotel for the sunday morning breakfast Buffet.

Seaworld

Queens Park Ipswich - great new play areas, free animal enclosure and fantastic Japanese gardens.

It is hard to come up with things, I agree. How about:

The Museum
Science and Technology Centre
Feeding the ducks in the City Botannical Gardens
Underwater World
Having a picnic at the park
Australian Woolshed
Australia Zoo
Alma Park Zoo
Cruise the River on the City Cat
Go bike riding along one of the tracks
Go fishing.

That is about all I can think of at the moment.

How about Riverside Park at Seventeen Mile Rocks? My DD loves it!

Great idea for a thread - am always looking for things to do with the Tinies.

Howzabout...

Medieval Festival 3/4 July at St Michael's Church on the way to Bribie (I kid you not - it is absolutely SPECTACULAR)
Little train rides at Bribie and Bracken Ridge
Big steam train rides at Woodford and Rosewood
Gorgeous antiques/eclectic browsing and some beautiful eating to be had at Maleny/Montville
Trip on the City Cat up and down the river
Martime Museum and Diamantina navy ship, Southbank
Newfarm Park picnic and then walk through Newstead House
Any of the local museums are great for half an hour walk through and picnic
Australian OPen Garden Scheme have some fantastic gardens open most Sundays
Kite flying on SUndays at Sandgate's Pelican Park
Model airplane flying at Bracken Ridge (back road under the freeway - can't remember name)
Air Museum Caboolture and Caloundra

That's all I can think of sitting here...Sundays are our family days and we always go somewhere different.

Don't we live in the best place in the world! Seriously, we do.

Love

Cindy

The art gallery has a section just for the kiddies where they can be 'artistic'. The museum is a pretty good day out too.

Cheers Leia.

Wellington Point is a great day out. There is a small playground and if the tide is in the kids can go swimming (although a little cold currently.) and if it is out, you can walk out to King Island and back. There are heaps of things for the kids to look at, including crabs and fish, shells. BBQ's and chip shop help with food.

Kidspace park - Chermside
Woolc*ck Park - Red Hill
Anzac Park - Toowong

hi there
We are fairly new to Brisbane as well but some
things we have found to do are -
Colmslie Beach Reserve at Murrarie is great
The Esplanade at Wynnum is fantastic in summer
but great swings for all yr round
Lollipops at Cannon Hill
Fort Lytton at Port of Brisbane
Southbank with museum, gallery etc
There is a good website called ourbrisbane.com
that has a section on what to do with kids around
Brisbane. It has a lot of the things that have been
suggested but there are some other great ideas
as well.
There are so many great things to do that don't
cost a lot of money and compared to Sydney they
are not overrun with people either original.gif

Beth Boyde Park at Thorneside ~ great park, with loads of swings/slides and its right at the beach too original.gif

Currumbin bird sanctuary ~ took the boys there a few weeks back and we all had a blast original.gif

T'is all I can think of for now LOL!

The lagoon in Redcliffe.

Fish and Chips bought from "Morgan's Seafood" at Scarborough and eaten on any of the beaches around there.

For train fans there's a Heritage rail steam train that runs from Roma Street Station on the first Sunday of the month. It travels on a loop down to Sherwood and Back through Bowen Hills; just the right length trip for toddler's attention spans. Book with Queensland rail on 132232. On the day we went, the train was full of excited kids, and we had a picnic in Roma St Parklands too.

condanilla falls which is great for a BBQ and then lovely walk to a beautifull waterfall.

also up that way are the big pineapple, superbee ect ... (i dont know if these have been mentioned ive mostly scanned the posts)...

also on the way to the gold coast is springbrook for waterfalls ect and mt tamborine has cedar crewk falls which are great and you can swim in them.

For those around the Mt Gravatt area:

A drive up the top of Mt Gravatt
Broadwater Park has a great play area
Daisy hill has a Koala centre which is free and has a great walkthrough areas designed for under 10s
Feed the ducks along the bikeppath at the back of Wishart (near Wendy Place play area)
Go to the splash pools at Chandler
Monkey Business play centre at Capalaba
Colmslie Park off Lytton Rd (fantastic park)
Miniature train rides ($2 for kids over 5 - under is free! at park on Wynnum rd (email if you want further details on this one).
Wynnum Manly has an ecellent play area with random water spouts - always fun with the kids
Hop on the train and hop off at Central station and go up the clock tower of city hall (a favourite!)

So many things to do and so little time!
Cheers,

Wendy

Oops I forgot to add the piece de resistance! Try a day out at Coochie Mudlo Island. Hop on the ferry at Victoria Point (about$4) and ride over to the island (5-10 minutes) and spend at day at the beach, finding shells. You can walk across the island in 15-20 minutes, stop at the 2 play areas and stop in at the local craft shops. then ride the ferry home. My kids absolutely love it!

Also try the Gold and Kids program through the city council. It has free stuff that grandparents can do with your kids (my kids went bowling, ice skating and to the planetarium for free these holidays! (ages 4and up)

Another great day is at Pietrie Markets on Sunday mornings. There is a permanent little farm where kids are given a bucket of food and they feed it to the animals in the enclosures. You can also climb on the big fig trees there and then ride the little train that goes around the markets - a great morning out.

Also try the library for pantomines in the holidays. we saw a brilliant puppet show of Peter and the Wolf these holidays and all for free. They do this every holidays.

I think I'm the queen of free stuff - guess I have to be with the 5 little ones!

A Toowoomba mum here! Can anyone tell me where the Science Centre is and if there's an entrance fee? I've been to one in Melbourne and it was great for toddlers with lots of interactive touchy-feely stuff to do. Is the Brisbane one the same?

And, is there much for toddlers to do at the State Library? It's been well over a decade since I've been there and from memory they only had 'kiddy' stuff on school holidays. Have things changed?

Thanks.

The science center used to be be great for toddlers- but they recently moved it to southbank (in the same building as the museum) and is no longer any good for kids under about 4. Also it's much smaller than it used to be sad.gif. Entry fee was about $7 from memory- absolutely not worth it with littlies but i would say kids aged 4- 10ish would love it.

A favourite in this house is to park at west end and catch the city cat around to new farm park for a play and a picnic.
Favourite parks with DS are svobda park at kuruby, can't remember the name but the one near the police station at woodridge, and the "airoplane" park at acacia ridge.
On wet/ cold days we head to bunnings for play on their indoor play ground (always less crowded than maccas playgrounds and easier to see the kids).
Another good indoor center is Wriggle It at woodridge, which has a good area for under 3's and lots of car's ect for the over 3's as well as the usual jumping castle, ball pit ect.
Does anyone know if they still print that book "places for little faces in brisbane"? I have got an old copy of it but would love an updated one, it's fantastic!

I would recommend the qld rail museum. Went there expecting 2 hours to be sufficient but could have spent the day. Over the school holidays was witches and wizards with focus on harry potter and storytelling by wizard etc etc. From Dec 26 there will be thomas and friends but in addition to this there are many activities such as engine of a train where can sit in and simulate driving, model trains, nipper train stations, and lots of science station. I upgraded to annual membership which I believe allows access to sciencecentre at southbank as well. the rail museum is at ipswich

Here's something from extra from talking with the woman that wrote places for little faces.....

And Kalinga Park at Nundah certainly meets that criteria. Suitable for just about every age, one of Brisbane's newest playgrounds has already shown councils are getting it right.

Five tree houses, sandpits, this place is a world of entertainment. And, importantly, there's plenty of shade and water available.

Another new playground which has been operating for about five months is at Pacific Pines on the Gold Coast. Central Park has a 5m-high climbing net, a closed-off toddler area, structures for kids to traverse, as well as a cracker of a flying fox for kids small and, well...big!

“The whole community can come together and play, relax and spend half a day, a whole day. The kids can be entertained and the families can have a picnic and just enjoy the community,” explained Alex Wilford, one of the designers from Kompan Landscape.

From the fun these kids are having, Alex got it right. And the parents agree.

Other new parks worth a look during the school holidays are at Upper Kedron Recreation Reserve, Gregory Park at Milton and, for adventurous kids over 10 who like to climb, Wirreanda Park at Buderim.

At places like Pacific Pines, you'll also find the traditional favourites such as the humble swings, but at Newstead there's a shift away from the traditional favourites, ironically themed around a traditional favourite.

An 'Alice in Wonderland' wonderland has been set up, complete with talking doorknobs, an interactive chess board and a white rabbit around here somewhere.

It just seems to get 'curiouser' and 'curiouser'!

“It's all about having a park themed within its location, and here the location is right beside historic Newstead House. It's a kids' park from the Victorian Era, I suppose. We've got a heritage-listed property, we've got a heritage building in Newstead House, we have to design a park that fits in with that landscape,” explained Councillor Tim Nicholls from Brisbane City Council.

Cr Nicholls says this is the direction playgrounds are taking - educational, challenging and fun all rolled up into one.

“It requires the kids to do a fair bit around the place and to have fun and to create little secrets and surprises around corners and behind trees.”

Kalinga Park was great for a short time but someone burnt part of the wooden play structures down last week... not happy!

Jadas mommy the Museum is free to enter.

you also have to pay to get in to the science centre downstairs.

good place on a wet day is scallywags sandgate road virginia i'm sure their are others in south, east and west brisbane similar.
sutton beach redcliffe and shorneclife beach next to pierre is a nice small shallow beach for kids and babies.scarborough has a play area with big trees all twisty and huge that kids about 4 and up love dont miss that one its a dream for kids and is also enclosed and has good play area for babies also.
my-gorgeous-boys
John Goss Reserve on Maundrell Tce at Aspley is great for kids all ages & has toilets!!! which is also important I think. Has play equipment for toddlers & up. There is also a dog park at the top of the hill behind the park, so the furry member of your family can come too. It is great for a picnic & has bbq's & tables & lots of shady trees to sit under. We love this park.

Another place we like is John Oxley Reserve at Petrie. It is a huge big open area with lots of shade & some good play equipment. It also has bbq's & tables & toilets. There is a dog park attached to this ones as well that actually has a bbq & table with shelter "in" the dog area. It's by the Pine River & if you walk through the dog park you can get to a little area where you can let the kids & dogs swim (low tide is the best time for this).

We live in Western Suburbs and love Riverside Water Park, but a word of warning, keep an eye on you littlies, there are reports of undesirables frequenting the park. Same problem at South Bank city beach.

Another good place on this side of town is Lemon Squeezy in Kenmore. They have activities for the kids and are very friendly.
Monkey_Island
Tracey do you mean rocks river side park? We went there last week but all the water section is closed off because of the drought sad.gif
Quite stupid in my opinion, they'd save a lot more water encouraging people to go somewhere like that than play with a hose/sprinkler/wading pool at home!
hooverdamsel
Oh no Sari, we were planning to go there on the holidays. I hope they turn the water on over vacation time - they'd have plenty of clients.

On the subject of wet weather entertainment these are my top picks.

Go to the library at Garden City and then walk the kids around and around and around the shopping centre.

Carindale shopping centre has a great free play area for little kids and it is all inside - also lots of walking space available.

Go swimming at the pool -chandler is undercover.

Go to any one of the indoor play centres

Catch a train or bus into town and hop out at the Myer centre or Central station. It is mostly undercover to walk to the Tower Clock and back.

Daisy Hill Koala Centre - Free as well

Park at the carpark under the museum (about $8) and catch the lift directly to the the entrance - all undercover.

HAve fun

I would have to say:

Southbank
Natural History Museum in the CBD
Lonestar restaurant, not for the food, just to watch kids faces light up when the staff do their song and dance routines original.gif

I have been past the Daisy Hill Koala sanctuary but never been in... any good ?

We have been to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, thats brill..

Our fave day out is upto O'reilleys to feed the birds.

SMBT
Another great one is Wriggle It Play centre at Logan.
Dino play cafe is opening in Victoria Pt at the end of Feb.
Most PCYC's run a kindergym program from 2 years on (great fun)
Cleveland pool has a great kids pool with mushrooms and a slide.

Daisy Hill Koala Reserve is lovely for a picnic lunch. There is a small boardwalk where koalas nest in the trees (way way up high). We also saw wallabies the day we went, but its not like a structured zoo or anything, just a park area.

Wendy that kidzone play area in Carindale has been demolished. I took DS there the other day to play and it was gone, nothing but table and chairs now! Maybe someone go hurt, it was pretty crazy. But disappointed are we as, it was the only place to take them for a bit of sanity relief whilst shopping.

Another great kids play area in the shops is at Loganhyperdome, its enclosed with perspex glass and parents can either go in with their kids or sit outside and watch.

Hi I'm a member of one of the buddy groups. But thought I'd post because of my work...
If you live near Brisbane check out Council's Active Parks program. There are lots of activities in suburban parks all across the city. And best of all, most are FREE..
For example:
*Come and try dance days with belly dancing, salsa dancing, South Pacific music and dance. Great to join in or just watch.
*Fit 4 Mums exercise class for Mums and bubs.
*Smallsports for 3 to five year olds
*Kidssports after school for 6 to 12 year olds. Most also have an Active Parents class so the parents can get exercise with a personal trainer while the kids enjoy structured 'play' in Kids Sports.
All activities are run by qualified and experienced instructors. Also a great way to enjoy fresh air and meet other parents.
To get a copy of the programs best to call Council on 3403 8888.

For $3.50 the bounce and play at Chermside is pretty good. DD had a ball.

There is another little pond at Bracken Ridge at Norris Road that DD loves going to to feed the ducks and there is a lovely park there.

For living here for so long I really have not been to many of the places you mentioned so thanks heaps for this thread.
SuezS
Just wanted to let you know that the April to June programs for Active Parks (activities in Brisbane Parks) is now out.

As well as weekend family activities we are also holding in suburban parks:
*Stroller Boot Camp (free) in Bald Hills and Shorncliffe
*Fit 4 Mums (free) in Holland Park, Wakerley and Manly
*Stroller Circuit in Stafford.

A great way to exercise with your bub and meet other mums. All with an accredited and experienced personal trainer.

For programs, phone Brisbane City Council (24 hours) on 3403 8888.

Take care,
Consciente
Hi I'm Corrie, I live in Brisse and have 2 kids, we are currently TTC #3. We love to go to Ceder Creek Falls and the kids adore Whites Hill Reserve. We are probably going to check out Springbrook falls to next week if the rain stays away original.gif.

Just noticed yesterday that the same equipment that was at Carindale is now at Garden City (though new) upstairs outside Harvey Norman. YAY!! A breathing space after a hard morning's shopping.

Huxtable Park at Chermside West is great for feeding ducks, spotting lizards, turtles and eels and has 3 playgrounds and a great bike/walking track.
Riversong
I noticed a new playcentre place yesterday at Morayfield, in the new part of the shopping centre at the Target end under the new carpark. It's called Peepo Meepo (Or something similar to tha!), I didn't go inside but thought some of you with littlies might like to try it.

Should have said that it looked like a similar place to Scalliwags/Lollipops etc

HI!

Just wanted to add that Seventeen Mile Rocks Water Park at the back of Jindalee/Darra is a great place in summer but be prepared to get wet!

Also Kholo botanical gardens in Ipswich is a big wide open play area in a beautiful park. (We got married there)It has a lot of bushwalking tracks. biggrin.gif

Great ideas,

Have you thought about a local Playgroup?? Great way to meet people in your area and terrific social contact for the kids.

Samford has a playgroup that meets 5 days fro 9.30 to 11.30am. Monday to Friday. Each group is different and may suit yours needs. we meet in the local RSL grounds and have a hut used exclusively for our use. filled with toys, craft, tea and coffee for Mums and Dads. You can just 'turn up'. First three visits are free (and should be much the same for most other groups). After which you join if you wish and contribute $3.00 for each day you visit. Playgroups are all parent run ie clean up etc is shared.

NOTE - Australian Woolshed has closed Permanently.
