Hi

I was hoping someone could give me some advice as my 9 week old DD has come down with her first cold. For the past couple of days she has had a very blocked nose and seems to be having some trouble breathing, especially when she is feeding. At night my DH and I keep checking on her to see that she is still breathing. My DH bought some Baby Basalm but it is not recommended for babies under three months. Does anyone has any suggestions? She has also started coughing today and I was wondering whether there was anything I could buy for that. Also, I am breastfeeding her - is there anything I can take to speed up her recovery or make her feel any better?

Thanks in advance

Hi Tanya original.gif
What usually works for me is taking bub into the shower or even just the bathroom and letting the steam unblock their nose. The kids recently had colds and I burnt eucalyptus oils in my oil burner and it unblocked all their noses and mine too.
I also put baby balsam on a cloth and left it in their rooms at night and I could still smell it in the morning and we all had uninterupted sleep.
You can ask your chemist about the coughing but I don't know if you can use anything with a little bub.
Take care,
Barbara.

Hi Barbara

Thanks for the advice. I have just bought some Eucalyptus oil which I will put in my oil burner. Brilliant stuff Eucalyptus oil isn't it? I'll also put some Baby Balsalm on a cloth in her room and see how it goes.

Thanks again

Hi,
My DD has recently had a bad cold too- took ages to clear up fully. Go to your chemist and ask if they hire vaporisers. It is usually around $20 week, but you can buy one for around $40. They are completely safe, you can use eucalyptus with them, and you can put it next to bubs crib/cot and let it go all night (they have an automatic switch that turns them off before they boil dry) I have one, and it's a god sent!
Good luck!

I used Fess Spray on my DS when he was quite little with a blocked nose, it says on bottle that can be used for newborn infants, but I would double check anyway, it is just a nasal spray, I still use it now to clear the nose. I also used to use a cotton bud and use that to help clear some of the snot too and it worked, just have to be careful with it. Sorry no ideas for cough as DS just had a cold at 14 mths and was told there was not much could give him. I also use the shower as well as we dont have a vaporiser, you can even put a dot of oil on shower head and heat will release some while in there.

We had many problems with DD and used saline every three hours, dried the nose up instantly. Just ask a chemist (they sell products at woolies etc but be sure there aren't any other ingredients in it)

To make her feel better? Really tough, but breastfeeding on demand always helped my DD to settle when sick (the more worked up the more coughing etc) and sleeping on an angle by propping up the cot head.

There's not a lot you can do for a cough, maybe a bit of tummy time with gentle rubbing/patting your DD's back - try putting her on your legs, head down lower than her body (more for a chesty cough/ infection- but maybe it would help?).

I hope she gets better soon.

All sounds like good advice, I'll take mental note for next cold....

Thanks
