HI girls

I am undertaking my first IVF cycle and I have had my
2nd scan and blood test today. I am a bit disappointed
and also worried about the number of follicles I have.

I have PCOS so my doctor has put me on a lower dose of
150 Puregon for fear of not wanting to OHSS and
because this is my first cycle so it think this is why
the lower dose.

The nurse said I have 4 good ones on my right and 3
good on my left they range from about 15 - 19 mm (I
think) with a few smaller follicles there as well.
They may trigger tonight so just waiting for them to
speak to my doctor and call me back this afternoon.

I am worried about so little follicles, but they told
me it is quality not quantity, has anyone else been in
this situation?

I am a little worried!

Tees, first of all congratulations for undertaking
your first cycle. It's a hard road and takes a lot of
courage.

seven follicles of a good size is a pretty good
result. I'm one of those people who has lots of
follicles normally (in 4 stim cycles, I've had an
average of about 15 or 16) BUT, and it's a very big
BUT, I've had four stim cycles and eight frozen
transfers and only one pg.

I would agree with your nurses. It IS quality and not
quantity. Besides, the first cycle is always an
unknown with regard to how you are going to respond to
the drugs and with your PCOS they would be being
cautious to ensure you don't overstimulate.

So I would trust the experts at this stage and relax
and see how you go. I wish you all the very, very best
for your EPU and transfer and hope you have an early
BFP. Take care

I had 7 it's a good number you don't want to many cause if you over stim it's horrible. My Dr aims for a max of about 10. And first go is always a bit of an experiment with regards to how you stim.

Good luck hope it all works out.

I think that is a great number, it seems like they are more likely to all have eggs in them when there are less too (though I could be imagining that). I just had my transfer today from my first IVF. I have PCO and on 125 of puregon I ended up with around 30 follies, they aspirated most but not all of them and only got 11 eggs (11 egss is good, but it was less than one egg per 2 follicles). All that those extra follicles are doing is causing PAIN and producing huge amounts of hormones... I have not yet developed OHSS but I feel that I am teetering perilously close to the edge. I sincerely hope to never stim again, but if I do have to and it is in the near future I will be asking to take a lower dose of FSH and aim for less follicles.

I'm on my 1st ivf/icsi cycle. We have mf/endo. I'm 27 and dh is 27. I was on gonal f 112.5iu to begin wiht. They said it was a small dose coz of my age. After the 1st scan showed nothing, my dr upped my dose to 187.5iu. On my 2nd scan it showed 2 smallish follies. My dose has now been upped to 225iu and I am going for my 3rd scan tomorrow. I've heard of some girls having between 5-25 follies. I hope I have a few more when they do my next scan. I don't know what they'll do if I don't?

HI girls thanks so much for all your replies.

Dinkydi,ShereeW, Ridani, Sebela, all your posts have
made me feel alot better and more confident thank you
so much!

Jules I am sure they will keep you stimmed until you
get enough follies, like all the girls here have said
to me you dont want too many! So hang in there and I
hope you get a better result on your 3rd scan.

Thanks guys so much! I have the trigger injection
tonight at 10.30. I also have come down with a touch
of the flu so staying home from work and dosing up on
panadole! gosh i hope i feel better in the morning.

Hi Tees

welcome to the forum... there is alot of nice people here who understand how you are feeling or at least try to understand and help you..
I wish you all the best with your cycle and fingers cross you guys will be blessed with a little miracle!

for us.. last time were on 375 of puregon(units i guess..just remember the number) which is pretty high, last time we got 7 eggs, 4 of them fertilized.. which we were estatic about, as the time before we got no embries.. this time will be on the most highest amount of drugs - and hopefully we'll get embries again.. this time we are only having one put back and hopefully that will end in a pregnancy.. (brings tears to my eyes each time i think of it.. not sure if its me or the pill, very emotional at the moment)

4 is a good number, dont be dissappointed with that, as like someone said.. quality is better than quanity..
but wish you all the best.. let us know what the outcome is with the ivf..
good luck

I had the exact same thing happen to me easter last year, I was started out on the lower dose and gradually increased as I was not responding . We ended up with 7 follicles although I didn't have as large ones. Anyway they ended doing the extraction, it was a rollercoaster of a week one day they were doing the right thing then the next they had slowed down. We ended up having one emb to transfer they stressed to us not to get our hopes up. Unfortunately it was unsuccessful. The doctor and nurses made us see the positives to come out of the cycle even though it was unsuccessful, yes we had eggs, yes they fertilised. For our next cycle we started with a higher dose my body responded much better we ended up with a successful cycle and pregnancy.
Wishing you all the best for the rest of your cycle I will have my fingers crossed for you.
