O.K so after my DD n deciding she wont tollerate any formulas she has been put on Pepti-Junior. Problem is she is taking even less now and both DH and I are wondering if she just dislikes the taste. Does anyone have any knowlege on the matter, had the same experience? Is it just a matter of her getting used to it? DH has stayed home from work today and is feeding her because I just cant do it anymore.

HELP

Hi. poor you. I have been there, believe me! All 3 of my babies had this problem. One on lactose free, one on pepti junior and one on neocate (even worse than pepti!). How long have you had her on the pepti? She may have gotten some bad feeding vibes from the other stuff you were trying before and be just resisting out of habit. If this is the case she may improve after a while.

It also depends why you changed formulas. My last bub couldn't even tolerate the pepti as it is derived from milk protein. He is on soy now which tastes much better than the synthetic stuff. Have you tried it? I use it in cooking and even my older kids like it.

My kids also had silent reflux which caused them pain which stopped them feeding. It's so awful when they refuse to eat. My 12 mo still goes on hunger strikes when his teething gets bad or he is sick.

Once we had them on a formula they could tolerate and got some medication for the reflux it was much better. Hang in there, and ask questions. There is a good website to look at that explains lots about food intolerance and reflux:
www.disa.com.au

Good luck! don't give up - it will get better.

Hi Deb, thankyou for your reply.

Anna was diagnosed with silent reflux too, but she doesnt have it and I have taken her off her meds. I rang the doctors the same day I put this post in and asked if it is possible she doesnt like the taste because she wont take it, anyway I didnt speak to my G.P cos he wasnt there. I spoke to one I have never seen before and he said that at this age she wont refuse to eat because of a taste. He said that he doesnt believe she has any intollerances and the reason for our feeding troubles is behavioural. He spent a good twenty minutes on the phone with me explaining what he believes is going on and told me what I have to do to fix it. This was Friday, it is now Sunday night and she finished two bottles today. the whole behavioural theory makes sense to me but I am really angry no-one has picked it up before now. DD has six bottles a day and most feeds were taking an hour of fighting and she still never finished her bottles. I will never get that time back with her. Anyway Im not getting into that. The doc says to keep her on the pepti anyway. She has had some good feeds on it so it cant taste too bad. I dont totally believe that they cant find the taste bad because she pulls a funny face when she brings a little back up, she looks as if she has sucked on a lemon.

Hi Anna's Mum

first of all sympathies it is not much fun. With DS he was silent reflux and cronic constipation to the point of suppositories. I think they know that man if I drink this it is going to hurt (silent reflux) and when it comes out the other end it is going to hurt too!

DS was put on a number of different formula's and I don't think taste was every an issue. I just think he knew that it hurt.

I know you must be so stressed and our bubs do sense it. Maybe try a different place in the house to feed different visual association for bub. I don't know but you get to the point that you will try anything.

I don't think I would put it all down to behavioural if she is grimicing and in pain after a feed then something is going on infants don't do things just to be difficult. Ask the GP about trying 1ml of mylanta before a feed that i think helped us a little. Also maybe try feeding a little more upright and keeping upright after a feed.

Sorry I know I have gone off on a tangent, you asked simply about taste I sympathise with you and hope with my fingers crossed that my next bub doesn't do same.

Can I ask did your bub have constant hiccups in the womb? Just asking as DS did and he had all these problems and this bub hasn't had hiccups once......or am just being hopeful! original.gif

Hi Lachlan's Mum. Funny you say that about hiccups - mine have all had hiccups in the womb and early on after birth and all had reflux. There you go. I think I remember you from the reflux thread! How old is your DS now?

Anna's mum - hang in there. I hope your dr's advice helps.
How do you know she didn;t have reflux? They don't have to actually vomit out anything to have it, and sometimes the meds don't help until the right dosage is found. Our youngest actually was intolerant of the Zantac! It took a while and 2 paeds to realise that that was what was making him have cramps and diahorrhea. Anyway, that's another story.

Good luck .

Hey guys, thanks again for your replys. The reason I dont think she has the silent reflux is because she is very settled after a feed and in between feeds. Also I used to do all the things they told me like raide one end of the cot, only change her before a feed and give her zantac and infant gaviscon. Thickening the formula made her worse. I dont think she is in pain I think she is bored. She has always been such an alert baby and extremly happy. Advanced in strength for her age too. She simply thinks there are better thinkgs for her to do than feed. She takes enough to take the edge off her hunger then starts looking around and pulling off the bottle, even stopping for a chat. I have started feeding her only at the kitchen table and I cant look at her or talk to her or she wont feed. Its my own fault cos I have always interacted with her too much at feed times instead of keeping them low key. I suppose you learn these things the hard way and i am paying for my mistake now. I always wandered why she took her night feed so well, its because i have always kept that one low key. Anyway gotta go and get one last on into her for the night. She still dosn't sleep through cos she doesnt take enough during the day but a late night feed will make her last till 3-4am.

Thanks again guys.
