When should you change to a booster seat. DS is just 15kg which I thought was the weight to change to was just waiting till he got a bit heavier. But is it also when there head is above the back his is just by a couple of cm.

If he is ready to change does he need a H harness can you use these on normal belts or only the lap sash one which he can at in our car as the car is too small and with DD seat. Or can he just have the normal belt which goes over the shoulder and lap.

We moved our DS into a booster seat in January he weighes 17kgs.... his sholders were getting too high to fit on the last adjustment of his car seat. We use a H harness for him and you can use them on normal seat belts if your H harness comes with a clamp to hold the belt together. I personally feel that using a H harness is safer but thats my opinion....

When I was pregnant with my youngest my eldest was only 2.5 yrs and weighed 11-12 kgs, so I got a Maxirider car seat which can take kids from 8kg to 26 kg or 6mths to 6-7 yrs.

I currently have my youngest is this using the harness. She has been in this since 2.5 yrs and weight of 13 kg. My eldest is now on a half booster with the seat belt. Alanna outgrown the maxirider when her head came above the top of the seat by eye level. Before moving her out of that seat she was using is with a seatbelt as she outgrew the harness.

You son can and should stay in his infant restraint until he reaches 18kg or when his eyes reach the same level as the back of the car seat (as there is not enough protection for his head in an accident). The absolute minimum age he can move into a booster seat is 14kg- although obviously, during an accident, he will be much safer in an infant restraint.

Once you do move him to a booster you are much better to restrain him with a H-strap, and only use the normal seat belt when your son gets too heavy for the H-strap (26kg or around 7-8 years of age). Although technically there is nothing illegal about just using the normal seat belt, but it is much safer duting an accident if you use the H-strap.

IF you car only has lap/sash belts you will need to used a little gadget to convert it to a lap only belt if you want to use a H-strap. The little gadget is called a 'gate clip' or sometimes a 'converter' and often comes supplied with the H-strap. If it doesnt you can buy it at baby stores or Kmart/target etc for about $7.

Where do you get a H strap from? I've not seen them anywhere but I may just be blind.

Kmart/Target and BigW and all baby stores should stock them. Sometimes Myre and David Jones. Probably also Marlows/REPCO car accesory shops. Bascaily anywhere you can buy car seats.
