Hi guys my ds is almost 5 yrs old in march..
and I know his behaviour is practically normal for his age..
BUTTTTT when i call him to say get off the road and go in the back yard and play.. he doesnt listen.. even if i speak normal he doesnt listen.,. so then i yell it out and sitll doesnt listen.. its for everythign just not that stuff its everyting that hes not supposed to do.. as eitehr its dangerous or its not on..
Now when he talks its always VERY LOUD For majority of the day..
Do you think he has some sort of hearing problem? Cause surely 3 yrs like this isnt normal..
surely its not selective deafness. so to speak..
im beside myself on what to do..
he hasnt had a hearing test..
What shoud i do?

I took DD to the audiologist because I thought she had a problem i.e. not hearing me. Turns out she was fine and was doing the selective hearing thing, which when I thought about it had been doing it to my mother all my life. LOL Apparently most kids at this age do it. It doesn't hurt to get him checked and your local hospital should do hearing tests for free.

Book in to have ahearing test through your community health centre. there is a waiting list - but you can go privately and pay upfront. It might be better to rule it out now.
It could well be selective hearing, but if you get it checked at least you will know for sure. If there is a hearing problem, the sooner they identify it, the better. And at least your mind will be at ease that you have done all you can.

My 5 year old had the same thing. All of a sudden you talk right next to him and he couldn't hear you. We took him to the Community Health Office and they did two hearing tests within 2 weeks.
They said he didn't have a problem but he had a bit of a cold and that his ear might be blocked. About three weeks later he got a massive ear infection in his ear with boils and everything. Now that is all cleared up there is nothing wrong with his hearing again.
Oh and the tests were free......and no waiting list.

I reckon it's selective hearing but it can't hurt to have a test done, my DD just had one done because her speech is a hard to decipher for some & they found her hearing was fine but that she may have an OT problem. Like audiometric just said the speech would be a dead giveaway.
I tend to do a home test by standing behind them & whispering 'chocolate'. You'll soon know if they heard you.
