My son will be 3 next week and he still speaks mostly in his own jargon. We understand about 20% of what he says, the rest is continuous scribble! My first child was speaking in sentences just after 2 (also a boy). So I don't know what I am not doing or should I even be terribly concerned about this? He understands what we say to him. I am also having trouble toilet training, he will do a wee on the potty if I put him on it but will also wee and poo in his pants despite having just being toileted.
Michele.

If you are concerned get his name put down with a speech pathologist - you can do this the your local community health centre. There is a wait, but sometimes you can get bumped ahead due to cancellations. If his name is fown and during that time his speech improves - cancel the appointment.
We took our 2.5 year old girl, as she was only saying part of her words and was having difficulty with certain sounds. It turns out thst the sounds she was having problems with are common problems. Her speech has improved greatly in the last 2 months, however we have to watch her slurring her "s". If it still slurred by next March we need to see the pathologist again.
It definitely put my mind at rest to know that Isabella was developing fine. We read through a rhyming alphabet book every few nights and this helps to reiterate correct pronounciation without it being an in-her-face drama.
