My son turns 9 soon and it is his "non party" year which means he can have a couple of friends over but no big party (he has one of these every second year).

We did a slumber party 2 years ago with the DVD and homemade pizza so I suggested to him a movie and restaurant pizza/meal afterwards but unfortunately there are no decent movies on for kids outside school hols.

What else can I do that's interesting but not too expensive? We are in Vic so outside options are limited in winter.

Bowling, Timezone are fairly overdone. I thought something like Go Karts or Rock Climbing but they seem to have either min age or min numbers for formal booked parties, rather than just casual entry.

The boys are very sporty if that helps?

Any ideas?

An AFL or Melbourne Tigers Basketball Game? A visit to the MCG Museum? An hour or 2 at a Golf Range, the Cricket Nets or Hire a Tennis Court court at Melbourne Park.

It really depends on what you have local I guess.
We have a ropes course (Treetops adventure park) near us (NSW, so not much help directly), which is loads of fun for the kids, and no minimum group number required.

I second the going to a sports game, depending what you have near you there may be AFL, soccer, Rugby, netball or even ice hockey.

otherwise they could go to a local ice rink for the day, or if your son has a favourite team he likes to watch a backyard BBQ while the game is on could be fun for him and his friends.

Thanks guys. Not much AFL left to choose from and they all barrack for different teams.

We've decided on dinner at a local hamburger restaurant (not Maccas!) and then a sleepover with DVDs; pancakes for brekkie, then a kick of the footy before the kids go home. Not too exciting but he seems happy with that. Appreciate your replies. biggrin.gif

My DD took her friend out for his 14th birthday and they did indoor rock climbing, go carting and then the movies. He loved it, so I would have suggested those things original.gif

Have fun!

I would ask the boys to bring their nerd guns and set up obstacles, paper streamer "laser beams" etc in the backyard, maybe even some water balloons filled with flour etc?
Fun messy and cheap!!
