Yes, I had this with DS1. It's really hard when they are young because people expect their behaviour to be so much better, but as they get older I've found it not so much of a problem.

DS#1(7yo) is very tall for his age but he has also had a mild speech delay and is a little young, maturity wise(but within normal limits for a just turned 7yo!) But because he looks older, people expect more of him, and treat him like an idiot because he speaks and behaves like a "young" 7yo instead of the 9-10 yr old they were expecting. Now its hard because he doesn't realise people think he's older than what he is, but he does pick up that they are treating him like he's stupid - which he now often says about himself sad.gif

I'm not a bad mum, I'm a good mum with low expectations
My DD in my sig is tall for her age and many people have told me they thought she was 3 1/2 - 4 years(she's 2 1/2). At 8 months she had shoulder length ringlets and on my hip most people would think she was about 14 months.

My son isn't especially tall and is a complete light weight but has always been judged older.

It seems with him to be something about the way he carries himself and in his face he looks older. He has always seemed very aware of what goes on around him to. always gets the "old soul" comment

Even though he isn't physically different to others his age he still got the "why aren't you in school" comments a full year before he was old enough to start.

He is 4 now and it is starting to even out.

DS at 23 months looks closer to being 3 (height & weight) and when people comment on how "big" he is. and that I should cut down his food intake. I just roll my eyes and ignore them.

I have received a "wish you could just shut up that son of yours." I replied with a short "he's not even 2 yet, so please." she then looked shocked and walked away.

ETA - It was around 6.30pm and he was overtired. I dont think I was rude but you never know.

I too have the opposite situation. DD is 3 next month and is the size and weight of an average 2 year old or a large 18 month old. She also has a young face. People often are shocked when they here her speak as her speech for her age is amazing (more like a 4 year old). Her confidence in doing things is also unbelievable. She is 3 going on 10! Her younger sister (11 months) also looks younger. She isn't as small (25 percentile) but gets mistaken for a 6/7 month old.

is it only a dream that there'll be no more turning away?
I was like this as a kid - 95th for height, 5th for weight and a very early and clear speaker. Drove my poor mum nutty, she used to take my baby book to sporting meets because my age was always questioned.

DD1 wasn't quite so dramatically out of proportion - 75th for height, 5th for weight, but people would accost me for carrying her saying she was old enough to walk when she was only 2 or 3.
