So I'm TTC and I had been taking a seperate folate tablet, and a multivitamin that didn't have folate. I ran out, husband picked out new womens (the other had just been a cheap general sex-indeterminate one) and it has folate in it.

How much is enough and how much is too much? It's not a preconception/conception multi, just a woman's multi, so I don't want to be lax, but on the other hand I don't want to overdo anything either of course.

400mcg minimum. Up to 1,000 mcg is fine (that's how much my FS recommended during IVF).
Caveat: Are you a vegetarian? too much folate supplementation can mask a B12 deficiency

Accordibg to my naturopath you can't get too much folate....

That being said, I think the recommended dose is 500mcg daily for the general woman TTC. I think elevit has 700/800mcg.

I'm taking close on 6mg (over 10 times the recommended dose) as I've had a baby with a Neural tube defect... FS, geneticist and OB recommend it do there is obviously no dangerous side effects (except as PP said, it can mask a Vit B12 deficiency)

Thanks so much ladies!

I'll have 800 if I take both together, and only 300 if I take just the multi.

I'm going to take both. I had an image of doing something really stupid and hurting myself somehow - like you hear every once in a while about someone banging back A's until their liver runs screaming down the street or whatever.

My mind's at ease about the 800. I have been veggo in the past but am not right now. Thanks muchly!

I also take 5mg of folate due to MTHFR gene, i also take B6 and B12 as recommended by my genetic specialist. Just make sure the womens multi doesnt have Vit A in it as it is dangerous in pregnancy.

Your body will pee out anything it doesnt need.
