Stressed....Whose Stressed...Who Said That!
Hi,

Now that I have decided on getting a new modem I am at a loss as to which brand to get....Linksys or Netgear. I have a Belkin modem atm but it took me ages to get it working, and I dont want to go through that again.

I have never heard of Linksys but my DD has one and swears by it, it was recommended by a computer salesman Tounge1.gif

I use a Netgear Extender to extend the range of the internet from outside in the study to inside the house and this extender works perfectly...well when the internet stays connected it does.

So which brand would you likely choose?
Or do you have another preference?

Any ideas?

Lynn

Is your modem/router hot? I know our internet gets dodgy if there's not sufficient airflow.

If it's been working fine for 3 years, I wouldn't be surprised if age is finally getting to it. Try standing it upright for maximum airflow. check the cables are in their sockets properly. If that doesn't work, you may be up for a new one, but they're not toooo expensive IIRC

generally I find that after 2/3 years the modem goes down hill and it is generally time to replace it.

I just recently replaced my voip netcommmaxx modem because the wireless was kicking us off more and more. Also the speed of the internet was slower than it should have been.
This had been happening slowly over months and then started really noticing it during 2 weeks, where we just kept having problems.

New modem and everything is running as it should again.

Can you test the modem at someone else's place and see if the same thing happens?

I've had some issues with internet outages the last few months and whenever I ring up my ISP's tech support, that's the first thing they get me to do, which is a pain in the backside, although fortunately I can test it at a friend's just down the road (so far my modem was always fine and the problem was either at their end or with the line, but they won't take your word for it until you tell them you tested it and it worked fine somewhere else).

With my previous modem (which I had for about 5 years), I found that uninstalling and reinstalling it from time to time fixed a lot of issues. That's something else you could try before you go out to get a new one.

Lynn I had my old modem for about 6years when it finally died. The tech guy from my provider was really shocked and told me that you are lucky if they last 3-4yrs. So it could be your modem.

Is anyone else in your area experiencing difficulties with their service? - especially if you are with the same carrier.

Hi thanks for the replies.

The modem stays on 24/7 so yes it runs warm, but never hot. It doesn't sit on its side, it has rounded edges. But it sits near an old drafty window, just behind the curtain, so never in the sun, but it certainly doesn't get hot.

I used to have a D-Link one before this, and it never did this, it just stopped working....at least I knew that was faulty.... laughing2.gif

I can't take it to anyone else, as I don't know anyone near me. Plus I don't know if anyone else uses the same service provider as me...I am with iPrimus. I'm a lot of help.. sad.gif

I might buy another modem anyway to try it out, I can always use it once this one goes, if it does the same thing as this one.

Thanks for the help.

Lynn

I had very similar problem with my 7 year old dlink modem. I just went and purchased another one and that stopped all the drop outs. I bought a belkin but could not after hours get it to work (and that was callling the ISP and Belkin help). Got another Dlink and was up and running in about 2 minutes.

So worth the $80 odd it cost. (my old one had been cockroach infested and the cord had been roden chewed but it continued on for wuite some years in that condition).

Funny you should say that, I had heaps of trouble getting my Belkin up and running too, I ended up having to get my son to come down and install it. It took me 2 months to get the internet. I might try another D-Link as they are easy to install.

Thanks

I would be getting a Netgear Modem then. Usually, they make components that are compatible to each other and have software that is also compatible.

Are you getting it online or going in to a shop? If you are going in to a shop, you could always talk to the sales dude(s). Usually they have an idea if a certain ISP is having problems in your area too*

*providing they arent on commission with someone else. lol, then everyone other than their provider has problems.
