I've been getting cold sores just on the inside of my nose for many many years and this morning I wake up and one has popped up overnight on the edge of my lip
I'm starting a new job this Thursday so has anyone got any tips on how to make them heal quicker? I've been pumping the Zovirax on it all day. |

Get to the pharmacy and get 'lysine' its with the other vitamins. Take the max dose until its gone, then cut back to one a day or every other day for maintenance for a month or so. I hacent had one in years and used to get them several times a year. (obviously check first to make sure you can take them etc, allergies, interactions with existing meds).

Hi OP,
I don't have any tips for overnight cures, but I know some people have good success with nail polish remover applied to a cotton wool pad and held on the cold sore. Maybe alternate it with ice to soothe the discomfort. I have suffered with cold sores since I was a child, generally about four or five outbreaks a year. About four years ago in the lead up to my wedding, my biggest fear was that I was going to get an outbreak right before the big day, which would ruin the photos and leave me in discomfort and miserable. I did some research and found this: http://neveranoutbreak.com/ I am not usually an advocate of natural remedies but I was desperate, and I've had really good success with it. In the four years since I bought the stuff, I've had maybe two or three outbreaks, and I have applied the cream right away as per the instructions. The resulting lesion was much smaller, less blistered, and healed a lot quicker. Good luck. |

Too late for this one for you, but my Mum swears by holding ice on the spot as soon as she feels a tingle of one starting up (before you can even see anything). she uses those frozen kids icypoles in clear plastic. It stops them coming up sometimes and other times they come up like a tiny pimple, not a big cold sore.

Being a relative latecomer to coldsores and being completely horrified at the thought, I did a lot of research into remedies, and now whack the buggers with:
- zovirax, ice held to it, and lysine tablets when they first tingle/appear - supposedly make it come up less big - tea tree oil alternating with nail polish remover (i kid you not) applied with a cotton bud once they have come up - this seems to have the effect of drying them and making them burst much quicker than otherwise - after they've burst i carry on with the tea tree oil as i think it's an antiseptic or something There were a few more remedies on my various googles but these were the ones I ended up with. |

I second the Lysine from the chemist combined with Zovirax cream.
When I have cold sores I am lucky enough to have 3 or 4 nasty ones all together. I have used the Zovirax for a few years now with varying success but the Lysine (with extra vitamins I think Vit C & maybe zinc?) really makes a difference. Good luck, hideous things, I wish here was a cure. XxAnethyst |

QUOTE When I have cold sores I am lucky enough to have 3 or 4 nasty ones all together Oh you poor thing Amethyst, I couldn't imagine coping with that. Well I've woken up this morning and one half of my bottom lip, same side as my CS is so swollen like a big ball is in my lip. Also the glands (well I'm assuming it's glands) directly under my chin are a little tender as well. Can I assume this is all normal???? I've made an appt with my Dr for this afternoon as surely a CS can't affect everything else this much. I might def look into the Lysine though, sounds like a goer! QUOTE Good luck, hideous things, I wish here was a cure Me too! I could cope with them being on the inside of my nose as they were a lot smaller and you couldn't really see them. I swear by aloe gel. I used to get them every 2 weeks without fail and for years was on prescription medication for them, but find applying aloe vera gel makes them heal within24-48 hours. I no longer use the medication as if I feel the tingle a small dab of aloe will stop it in its tracks.
Good luck |

Does anyone know if I'm able to get Lysine in liquid form?
I struggle so much taking tablets so if I can get it in liquid form that would help. Also is do I get Lysine from a chemist or vitamin shop? This post has been edited by belinda1976: 08/05/2012, 11:44 AM |
