Hi. My youngest baby is 2 1/2 now and I cant really remember what they were doing at 12-13 weeks.

Can those with young babies please tell me if your baby will look at people in the face, or is this still to young and they still have trouble focusing on other peoples faces?

The reason I ask is that my nephew who is 13weeks old, won't look at people in the face, except for his mother and father. On the very rare occasion he has made eye contact with me, he smiles then looks away. Even if I hold him up to my face so he can see, me he won't look at me.
He is smiling and chatting away, his hands are waving around and you can see he is trying to hit hanging toys on the floor play gym mat. So he will look at them, but when it comes to people he won't. Is this normal? I can't remember.

I just have this nagging feeling that something isn't quite right, but I don't want to say anything and upset my sister if this is normal. And he is still a bit to young to be holding eye contact.

At that age they will hold eye contact with their parents for much longer than they will with anyone else so i would say that for the moment it is within the realms of normal

My little girl is 13 weeks and she will hold someones gaze but not for very long, other than mine and DH's. When she is with other people she is looking around for us. My dad thinks she looks straight through him. Ha!

Bit early to be diagnosing abnormalities in your nephew unless they are right out there hit you in the face kind of abnormalities!

I'm assuming he's being seen by a MCHN? I'd leave it to them and say nothing to your sister. Why worry her with your vague nigglings?

And what would she be able to do about it at 12-13 weeks anyway? Surely, if you're going to be telling someone that something is wrong with their kid, it has to be in the constructuve "telling you so you can do something about it" kind of way. Wait until he's 18 months, and if his social interaction is abnormal then, then say something.

In the meantime - babies all develop at vastly different rates, and acquire skills at different times. I'd say it is well within the range of normal - you are just heaps less interesting than mum or dad!

At that age, DS would get overtired so quickly and one of his big tired signs was not engaging or breaking eye contact quickly. Chances are that if you're there and he's been playing, he's become a bit overstimulated and he's trying to calm himself by disengaging. Looking at people is the most exciting thing ever to a baby that age and is very tiring
