This weekend we are having a witch and wizard party for my 8 year old daughter.
The party will be 1.30-3.30 and I was thinking of serving normal sort of party food that doesn't take much effort. So some fruit platters, sausage rolls, pies, chips etc. and then a few special things such as eyeballs or broomsticks or something in theme. However, I am assuming most people will have lunch before htey come (although school lunch starts at 1.30 so maybe I shouldn't) considering that should I be thinking of afternoon teas food's instead? Decorating a hall. The hall we are using is quite big, I've seen photos and hope to go and have a look but that might not be possible. We do have a little money to spend on decorations but with a huge hall I am wondering if it's best just to stick up some streamers and balloons and move on. I will have a few spiders around a couple of floaty ghost things you put a balloon in but I think trying to decorate the whole place other then a few streamers and balloons would be difficult and very expensive. I figureed I would do up another table with some decorations as well as the party tables. We have some helium in a tank and would do some helium balloon centerpieces for the table but we don't know how much is left. I don't really wan't to spend a fortune on decorations but I don't want it too look too bare at all. Anyone with any experience at decorating a hall? Miss 8 and I could also make a few handmade decorations (nothing specail) and we have a few toys like some dragons and a three headed dog we could put around as well. I just can't see it being enough for a hall... Oh I have a bunch of cardboard stars we could blue tack up, aparently their is not problem putting things up on the walls. Games. I'll get some spooky music for the games and miss 8 and I were thinking of Pass the parcel Muscial Chairs, maybe a Treasure hunt? Any suggestions for treasure? Any other game suggestions? I was thinking of making my own pin the glasses on the potter game or something but I can't seem to get my hands on a cheap harry potter poster in time (plus any spare time should really be spent on uni work). There is a pin the tail on the cat game at our local party store that isn't too badly priced I could get that. I was playing around with the idea of letting the kids do potion making (mixing a few differnt liquid drinks and some gummy worms of something together) but I think I may have moved on as cool as that would be. Hmm any other advice? Things I am not thinking of? |

I think your time frame does suggest lunch, so make sure you've got a few substantial nibbles to offer.
Sausage rolls and the like should be fine, I think. Otherwise, I think it sounds good, though, what kind of cake are you having? |

one of the Donna Hay Kids issues has a witch/wizard party in it, had some great recipes. I can have a loook for you tonight if you'd like (pm me). I would think lunch at that time. I would suggest setting up a food table in a corner of the room and decorate the corner, then have some tables/chairs set up to eat at. That way you don;t spend a fortune on decorations but you get the effect in a small space.

Otherwise, I think it sounds good, though, what kind of cake are you having? In terms of lunch though I figured you normally didn't eat for awhile at a party so I probably wouldn't be feeding them till the second hour? I'm happy to do it the other way round though if necessay. I think we will do cupcakes either spiders or owls or a combination of both. Neither are two hard and we always make some kind of novelty cake/cupcakes for the birthday's so I am confident in those. Don't get me wrong it's always a disaster but a fun one and they turn out looking okay. My favourite was the year we did Daleks I loved those. Spiders one of the first two images. https://www.google.com.au/#sclient=psy-ab&a...613&bih=689 Owl cupcakes probably soemthing like this we have done owls before and they were so simple http://www.google.com.au/imgres?start=195&...r:24,s:195,i:56 |

There are lots of tressel tables we can use so I was going to do up an extra one wit hte some black starry material and put some candles (unlit) and maybe some goblets I have some plastic ones I''m going to see if we can decorate them if not I'll dig out something else. Maybe an owl or two on the table. Thanks for that. The recipes would be great I will pm you. |

Okay so people are thinking lunch at that time that was waht I was originally thinking and then I thought well most likely we wouldnt'eat till the second hour after games. Should I just reverse that do you think and have party food in the first hour and then games? lol sorry for all the silly questions we normally just go somewhere like the science museum for partys or have a picnic and my brain is too full of essay to work properly.

I had a Halloween Party when I was a little girl - a few of the things I remember as being terribly good fun were: Broomstick races, Apple bobbing and 'the cauldron'!
Mum had a glorious old iron pot that looked just like a witches cauldron should - we mixed up a spell in it (Mum had written up a 'spell book') with various lollies that had been put into jars and boxes labelled "eye of newt", "tongue of frog" etc and all took turns stirring and chanting our way around the cauldron. The guests took a 'spell box' (a milk carton gift basket decorated with bats and spiderweb cutouts) full of the cauldron contents home after the party. |
