Thanks for reading. I am wanting to purchase an Ipad, am I best to buy before the end of June or wait until July now? I'm currently on unpaid leave but did get Maternity leave through work and then claimed all my long service which meant I got paid till March this year.

I will be earning far less next financial year than what i have this current one if this will make a difference to my options.

TIA

You actually can't claim anything where you have not been paid, so if you bought it now and claimed it and were ever audited the receipt would show the purchase at a time where you were not deriving any income and the claim disallowed.

Agree with OP and you can only claim (I believe) a percentage that you use it for school related work.

I got mine on mat leave and didn't claim it at all but I mainly use it for leisure than school too.

When u return to work world ur school offer salary sacrificing which would save you the tax?

You can't actually claim the cost of the ipad, as it's a depreciable item. So instead you would depreciate it over probably a three year period (your accountant will know). It's also pro-rated on the amount you use for work. It works out to be very little in terms of a tax benefit.

If you have school age children and get FTB you are probably better off claiming it against the education tax allowance.

thanks ladies.

No don't get any FTB. The Education Rebate seems quite beneficial to those that have access to it.

Ipad's are only $500-700 so you can claim the full amount in one year.

Are you able to salary sacrifice it?

My school will let you salary sacrifice a laptop / ipad if you are going to use it 80% school related "stuff" Not only do you then get your tax rate back, you also get the GST.
