My DD is almost 3 and we started the toilet training process in earnest about 2 months ago (although we'd familiarised her with the toilet and had a few false starts prior to this) The first few days were tough but she seemed to get it after a couple of days, and within a week all her wees and poos were going in the toilet without any problems.
She had occasional accidents but now about 2 months down the track she is having an accident almost every day, sometime twice a day, both for wees and poos. I was prepared for there to be accidents from time to time but is every day normal? How long do you think this will go on? It makes it hard to go out, I feel anxious all through music class, dance class and playgroup ... she refuses to wear a pull up for outings and often has a mini-meltdown when I try to get her back into clean clothes. She is a delightful child but not the most cooperative. I can see that she needs to go to the toilet but if I ask her she says no, if I tell her to go she says no, if I try to take her she will have a tantrum and end up wetting herself because she gets upset. Any advice? |

I TT DS1 & DS2 each when they were 3.25yrs.
They each 'got' TT within 5 days and after that were totally dry (I think DS1 has had 2 accidents since then - 3yrs later). DS2 unfortunately refused to do poo's on the toilet so I had poo in the undies for 6m though DD is coming up to 2.5yrs. I would LOVE to TT her BUT like you have said she can be stubborn and strong willed, so I am going to leave it more to 3yrs of age for her (She is Dec birthday and has to be TT by Feb for Kinder - otherwise I would leave it until 3.25yrs like her brothers). |

We're on a preschool deadline also - she starts in 2 weeks - oh well I guess they're good at dealing with accidents and maybe when she sees the other kids go to the toilet she will be more willing to go.

DS2 spent Feb-May doing poos in his undies, but only did ONE at Pre-School (only one day a week) in that time.

QUOTE I can see that she needs to go to the toilet but if I ask her she says no, if I tell her to go she says no, if I try to take her she will have a tantrum and end up wetting herself because she gets upset. My charming little DS2 does this the lil bugger. what I do when we go out if they haven't used the toilet right before we leave is take them as soon as we get there, they don't get a choice, I warn them before we get there that our first stop will be the toilets and this is working for us so far.DS2 has been using the toilet since Feb and we still have accidents with him (and he has shocking aim lol), yet DD who has only been using the toilet for 2 weeks hasn't had a single wet accident (has had the occasional poo accident as she struggles to time it right). We take the potty with us if we go on long drives just in case they need to go as I don't think DD could squat to save her life lol. |

It can take a LONG time. My nephew turns five in December and he has been toilet training since he was three. He still has at least one accident a day. His sister is a different story, just turned two and is already having fewer accidents than her brother.
My son took about 9 months before he was consistently accident free. Admittedly a lot of that had to do with my not taking a very good approach to dealing with accidents, but I was sleep deprived and easily aggravated. I'm hoping DD will be one of those 'Weekend Wonders' who get the notion down pat in a weekend as she hates having even a damp nappy, but I'm not going to hold my breath for it! |
