Hi all,
Just wondering if it's safe to get a flu shot when breastfeeding and does baby get immunity via milk? Many thanks |

If the flu vaccine is now recommended to all pregnant women then it stands to reason it would be fine for bfing women but you would need to check with the prescriber/Dr.
If the mother produces antibodies to the strains of flu viruses she is immunised with then those antibodies will be passed on to the baby via the milk. |

OP I am breastfeeding my 6 week old and went to get my flushot (through a work program) on Monday. The nurse immuniser wanted me to see my GP before they would give it, so I have to get the ok and go back another time. I had spoken to a colleague who also works doing fluvax programs and asked her if I could have it whilst breastfeeding and she said it was and they did immunise breastfeeding mothers so I was happy to have it, but the immunisers were pretty adamant that I needed to seek permission from my GP. Anyway,I ended up doing a bit of research when I got home and found that it is considered safe whilst breastfeeding.
As for the immunity via milk, the baby will not benefit from immunity because you vaccinate and breastfeed. However, they will benefit from the protective factor of you being immunised. Obviously I would talk about it with your own dr first so that you are informed and happy to make your own decision. I am going to ask my ob about it at my 6wk check on Monday but am happy to have it based on the research I did. |

I'm pregnant and breastfeeding and got the vax. It was the most painless needle I've had for some reason, no sore arm afterwards or anything!

I got the flu shot at my 6 week post natal check up and was all fine. As pp said immunity doesn't get Passed to bubs, but obviously good for bubs I you're less likely to get flu and pass it on.
