Seriously...

Elly has had 2 surgeries this year so far... today Bandit was limping. On the plus side we already had an appointment for him to get his vax, so at least he timed it well!

Vet had a feel around and couldn't feel anything untoward, but his limp is similar to a cruciate limp. He is happy to put a bit of weight on it when he wants to though and that would be unusual if it is a cruciate.

So he has pain killers and is on rest (*snort* good luck!) If he doesn't show improvement within 48 hours then back we go for xrays or some pain relief and a good feel.

Please let it be soft tissue, I don't want him to have to go through that :/

Also, my wallet will cry, but that is not my first concern.

I hope it is not a cruciate. Lily has had both of hers done - not fun. Fingers crossed it's just a minor war wound!

If your wallet is sad go see Peter Burgess in Braddon. Cruciate surgery is about $700-$1000 - very cheap.

FWIW my female dog has a slight tear in her cruciate and only has a slight limp when she "trots" she is weight bearing fine and our vet said she could rupture it tomorrow or in 2years so we just do light exercise but still have fun - including ball twice a week. I have her checked regularly and make sure she is weight bearing fine. Our vet doesn't believe into rushing into surgery. So maybe it is something you can manage with light exercise and medication for a while

I think our vet is the same! She didn't seem in a hurry to bundle him off to surgery.

DF said it would probably be $1k.. I'm not sure it would be that cheap... it cost us $1k for Elly to have both her eyes done for entropian, but they were bad. I will definitely keep your recommendation in mind shelly! Thanks original.gif

I'm more worried about the recovery for him :/

Train your dog, it's worth it!
Fingers crossed he's just bumped himself. Ursa had one of those unspecified limps that just appeared and then disappeared just as randomly.

Could it be arthritis? Don't know what the weather is like where you are, but we've got a cold snap here and it's playing havoc on my old dog's joints.

I would recommend a visit to a good canine chiropractor. I've seen so many cases of dogs written off by vets or misdiagnosed.

Many years ago, my then 18 month old dog started limping. Xrays were taken, told it was HD by vets, several hundred dollars worth of other tests. At my insistence, the xrays were sent to Wyburn and came back as 0:1 (almost perfect). Someone recommended a canine chiro, and he said her back was out of alignment, $35 she was good as gold. She's now 12 1/2 and still competing in agility. The vets had written her off.

It's worth the $30-50 it costs for an appointment to get them checked out before letting vets slice and dice.

Good luck!

That would be great thanks Shelly!!!

Thanks Casime, if they do think he'll need surgery I'll definitely take a trip to chiro first!

It could be, but he's still a pup! He's only 2! Then again that is also very young to do a cruciate too!

Very cold here in the ACT atm!
