Music in Labour

I am wondering what kind of music other women have listened to in labour. I am planning a home birth and have an image of myself pottering around the house to some music that I know and can possibly even sing/hum along too and then once things start to get serious changing the music to something else (maybe something with out words that I don't really know). What songs did you listen to during labour? Chill out jack johnson? mozart? would love some suggestions. Also did you have them on a cd playing out loud of through ear plugs on an ipod? Thanks

I had grand visions of music during labour. I had some relaxing playlists, some motivating ones etc. When the time came I just wanted quiet. All the work went to waste!

I had music playing through my labour. I had a water birth in a very darkened room & had a relaxing cd that just repeated, I found it helped me to relax & focus on my breathing. It was a kind of pan pipe cd ( sounds terrible but it wasn't). It was on very softly. Overall the room was very quiet.

Opera was for me during labour. Sopranos in particular. I just brought a stack of CDs that are favourites with me, and they were what I wanted. On repeat for the whole time they possibly drove my partner and care providers nuts but I don't (and didn't) care, that's what I wanted!

My partner remembered to put the CD on (homebirth) at one point, and it was really lovely. But then we all forgot after that. At one point in labour I began to sing, then I felt self-conscious. Which seems crazy as I was yelling instead . . . this time I am going to sing, I don't care! So maybe something to sing along to . . .

We just had the iPod in a speaker dock on shuffle. It's all music we like, and I was happy with that. Was a little bit embarrassing when a new mid-wife came on shift and popped in just as Bob the Builder came on though...she seemed to think it was starting a bit early!

I had a playlist all sorted, but the MP3 player never made it out of my bag. I'd just had my favourite music, figuring it would distract me, but I guess I'll never know - I won't bother this time around.
