I bought DS a new pair of shoes and put them on him this morning.

OMG! He threw his first tantrum. Laying on the ground kicking his legs trying to take them off, he wouldn't stand up and was screaming at the top of his lungs. I had to take him to daycare, so after 15 minutes I took them off and put his old ones back on. rolleyes.gif

I was unaware but he's been wearing a pre-walker sandal type shoe for the last 5 months and the new ones are sneakers for the winter and have a harder sole. They cost me $80. I can take them back and get a size larger in the pre-walker brand but they will still be a sneaker and I'm unsure whether he'll react the same way.

Daycare suggested bringing them in tomorrow and they'll try to put them on there.

Has anyone else experienced this? Would love to hear how you dealt with this if you have!

Have you been sticking to just the one pair of shoes at a time?
I found DS wasn't keen when we tried to change his shoes after he had his first pair for ages (more than 6 months), he did get used to them.. maybe just try again a bit later and if you can distract him while you get them on. Once on, he didn't seem to care.

LOL! Pat is VERY fussy about shoes. I never buy shoes without him trying them first for this very reason. We bought him a pair at the DC shop in Torquay a few weeks ago, there was 1 velcro pair which would be so much easier to put on him, but they were black/grey/white - he would not let us put them on his feet! Screamed, threw them on the floor and tried to get out of his pram. So we let him pick a pair. He pick the brightest ones on the shelf (with laces of course) and refuses to take them off. Everywhere we go, he insists on showing off his new shoes.

I also ordered him a pair of Cons from the US, which meant no trying them, no way was he letting them on his feet. Luckily they are a size too big so we can try again in a few months.

In answer to your question, I would return them, take him with you and let him pick a pair. They are going on his feet after all. original.gif

DS1 hates having new shoes, he won't even let me try them on him in the store first. In fact, if he's out shopping with me and I try on new shoes he tells me 'You don't want them' and 'You don't like them'.

What I do is show him the shoes in store, attempt to try them on, tell him I'm buying them and we'll just keep them at home. Then I place them in an obvious spot in the house where he'll see them often. I mention his new shoes a couple of times a day, and we tell daddy about shopping for new shoes.

Eventually (maybe a week or so) there comes a day where he picks them up and show us his new shoes, and then he eventually tries to put them on himself. From then, it's like they've always been with us and he can't imagine wearing anything else, lol!

It's tedious, but it works for us, and prevents any instore tantrums!

We had the same issue, and I persevered for ages trying to convince him to wear the new shoes (the old ones had a hole in them). We had gone to buy some, and he hated all of the shoes (he wanted the sparkly girls shoes) I picked out. I figured he would get over it, but boy, was I wrong!

In the end, I gave up, and took him to choose his own. He picked a pair of bright purple canvas sneakers, and a pair of bright blue and fluro orange sneakers, and he LOVES them.

I think he just hated the colours of the ones I picked (navy). He really likes looking at shoes now, and I find he generally hates most of the typical "boys" shoes - they are all grey, brown or navy after all! He just likes really bright colours. So many of the boys shoes are so plain compared to the girls - I would want glittery ones as well if I was him!

see, i found exactly the same thing with Pat. Maybe we should start a line of boys shoes in bright and sparkly colours! grin.gif

PS - these were the shoes Pat chose

Yep. He's been wearing the same pair for the last 5 months. They were his first shoes. It's probably what the problem is, however I wasn't expecting the reaction he had this morning. Bloody hell. ffear.gif

I got the new ones fitted and he didn't seem too fussed at the time. shrug.gif I'll take him back up later in the week and try some other pairs on. I'm not sure he would understand the concept of picking out his own pair at this stage.

Great advice and this approach is certainly worth a try, thank you. They've been sitting in the box out of sight since I bought them a couple of weeks ago. I'll put them where his other shoes normally are and I'll start working on it. Daycare can have a try too, plenty of distractions there.

They're bright and colourful aren't they? laughing2.gif

Just you wait until you're giving two options for outfits and he wants to wear red socks over all other colours. .

My DS is actually frightened of new shoes - both his new crocs and gumboots. He looks at them suspiciously like they are alive or something. Eventually I got him to wear the crocs by putting them on him when we got to the playground. DD convinced him to try on his gumboots and he has loved them ever since. His favourite colour is pink because of his big sis, so if I took him to a store to choose he would definately want the pink girly ones.
