I have an 18 mo DS, and I have a lot of trouble thinking up creative ideas for play. I feel like we do all the standard ideas, i.e. playing with play-doh, singing nursery rhymes and other songs, dancing and listening to music, reading loads of books, lots of shape sorting, he has a pack of shape flash cards he loves looking at and putting back in the pack, stacking blocks and general play etc.


I am just after a few creative ideas that might be outside the box, I have been googling and discovered that I can take play doh a step further by hiding little animals/dinosaurs in it for him to dig out, also getting wet sponges and having him throw them at a target outside. I guess I'm after those little ideas that are a little different.

So what fun ideas/games do you do with your LO?

We had a thread about this not too long ago so you might be able to dig it up fairly easily.

- While I'm doing hte washing up, filling her high chair tray with soap bubbles and adding food colouring - you can hide small toys beneath bubbles too.

- Adding food colouring to cream cheese for finger painting. You can also use yoghurt.

- Water painting on concrete outside or on the outside walls or fences.

- Covering entire table with paper and driving cars through paint and then over the paper.

- Covering musical instruments with foil and then listening to the different sound it makes, she has fun then unwrapping the foil (I confiscate it then, not good to eat!)

- Going outside with bag or bucket and collecting rocks, flowers etc.

Marble paintings are good fun, as are butterfly paintings - maybe a bit advanced, but good fun nonetheless.

Puddlewalks after rainstorms - jump in puddles (gumboots and old clothes required, great fun!), look for worms and snails and other critters that come out after the rain.

Hitting a balloon around the house - great for h/e coordination and much less damaging to household objects than a ball!

Hand and foot paintinfs on a big canvas from the cheapy shop, either that or just let him loose with a paintbrush! I did this with one of my nanny charges and his christmas present to his parents, he was 9 months old. It came out amazingly well!

If you don't mind getting a bit dirty, make some mudpies! Nothing better than a good mudpie!

Nappy-box cars - get a huggies bulk nappy box (or similar), paint it up a but, put some patty-pan headlights on, and zoom him around the house in it making crazy car noises

Have more ideas in my nanny-box, will dig them out a bit later on!
