Hi everyone original.gif I'm looking for advice on my DS nappy rash. He's 4 months old.

His first episode of nappy rash was when he was about 10 weeks old, I put this down to changing to scented wipes. Since he was born we used Sudocrem at every change but he still developed the rash. We ended up having to use hydrozole, and bepanthen to clear it. He ended up being allergic to Daktozin.

Since then it has been there on and off. Some days it's worse than others. He never has a completely clear bum!

It came back really badly over Easter and took 6 days to start to clear. We used Hydrozole, canestan cream and Desitin this time. Pharmacist recommended Desitin over sudocrem/bepanthen due to the higher zinc content.

I bought cloth nappies and really wanted to start using them so waited for the rash at easter to clear. I have since tried them on DS and the rash seems to have come back. sad.gif It's only ever a ring around his bum, not on his cheeks - there seems to be small raised bumps starting too. sad.gif I know it's not the cloth entirely as we had this problem prior but I am hesitatnt to continue with the cloth nappies incase it is making it worse.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and found something that works. I am concerned about the recurrent nappy rash and not being able to use zinc creams with cloth nappies. We have tried Moo Goo MSM cream & also using coconut oil after it was recommended but this seemed to make it worse (I have realized that they both contain coconut oil)

Has anyone had success with Paw Paw for nappy rash? (the one in the orange tube free of petrochemicals so I can use with cloth nappies)

I'm starting to think we won't be able to use cloth as DS' bum needs to always have some sort of barrier cream.

Just looking for any advice. Thanks original.gif

Nappy free time works best for us. Let their little bottom's breathe. Yes they can make mess & you'll have to be prepared for that, but honestly your child is suffering, for me this out weighs all else.

We also wash our nappy wipes before using them - wash out the chemicals that preserve them. Did this on advice by our health nurse. I don't know if it really helps to be honest.

Nothing beats nappy free time in my opinion wink.gif

I've always used Babies Only Smooth as a Baby's Balm. My DD has never had a bad rash, I apply it at the first sign of redness. It's an organic white clay based cream, all natural ingredients. I buy it at David Jones.
We use cloth nappies too and it's never made a mark or affected the nappies in any way.
Considering your DS's history, I dont know I clay would be ok for his skin or not, but it's been amazing for us.

ETA we use cloth wipes with water only.

Yep - nappy free time worked here too :-) Also, a tip I learnt along the way is to apply normal nappy rash cream i.e. sudocream and brush with cornflour over the top - adds extra barrier for bubs.

when i grow up i wanna be like me
We always used Hydrozole

Have you tried changing your laundry liquid? also lots of nappy free time. Do you use a nappy rash cream even when he doesnt have a rash? because I would use one of the barrier creams all the time (like sudocream or bepanthen) and then save the hydrozole for when he has nappy rash.

I didn't have any significant problems with nappy rash - lots of nappy free time is good. Also the one time DS was so red and raw I used the paw paw cream and that was great.

We used Nappy-Mate as a barrier/nappy rash cream for DS and it worked wonders for him. He had one really bad case of nappy rash when he was about 2 months old (which we used Nappy-Mate and Daktozin to clear up) and found that Nappy-Mate was a great preventative after that.
Good luck, I hope you can find something that can prevent it.

Had a terrible time when DS was a baby (now eczema, hayfever and allergies). Calamine lotion worked a treat as well as a special ointment that was prescribed by a dermatologist (modern day merchurochrome).

The best thing I've found is wash and dry DD's bottom with water and cloth wipes and smear on a very thin layer of lanolin (I just used the end of my lansinoh as I wasn't using it for my nipples anymore - but don't use it if you're still using it on nipples for fear of cross-contamination). We use cloth nappies too. Cleared up overnight.

Perhaps also try changing him very frequently until it clears up? Good luck. It's horrible when they have sore bottoms.

With the cloth nappies, what type are you using? What detergent are you using and what type of covers (if any) are you using?

I use cloth nappies exclusively for my DD, put a disposable on her and she will have a horrible rash that blisters after half an hour. I have to be VERY careful with detergents, there are only two I can use for her- the Earth Choice non concentrated one and the Aldi Laundrite one. Even then I have to be very careful with just how much I use or she will rash up.

Our rash routine is Terry flats with wool/fleece pilchers or no cover at all, cloth wipes with chamomile solution and for very bad rashes I use raw silk nappy liners. It usually clears up within two or three changes, but I keep her in the flats for a full day as rashes with her usually mean I've got detergent build up and need to do a strip wash.
