Hi

I know this is going to sound like a really stupid question considering I am the mum of an 18, 14 & 2 year old but I am having a panic attack about taking my newborn out in public for the first time.

My DD is 6 days old today & DH wants to go food shopping and all of a sudden I am having a panic attack about taking her out. I suppose it doesn't help when you read all the awful whooping cough outbreaks.

So can others advise when they took their newborn out for the first time & am I being a little over concerned. I have a whole list of reasons to feel very scared about something happening to her but don't have the time to go into it. I just know that I have never felt this scared before..

Any input would be great.

J-A

I would do what feels right for you. I took my DD out when she was 5 days old & I was a little uncomfortable about it but soon got over it.

Sometimes you have no choice, you can't keep hiding in the house.

My third son we stopped at the shops on the way home from hospital so he was 2 days old. I never worried about taking them out as newborns. It's a lot easier than taking them out when they are 2 wink.gif

I like cats, but I couldn't eat a whole one.
Five days old and three days old. If you let panic het the better of you now, it'll become harder not to give in to it later.

Mum of girls
DD1 I took out to dinner in Leicester Square at a restaurant/pub on her 7th day, which also involved getting the tube in London.

DD2 I took out from day 3 and we moved from UK to Australia at 17days.

OP - go out. No time like the present and once you've done it once, it gets easier, as you'd remember.

As soon as I got out of hospital.
My babies were safe inside their prams and I was not concerned they would come into contact with anything.
Would I have taken them up to the pre school before they were immunised to be cuddled? No.

We took DD to the shops when she was a week old. I had one shop assistant amazed I'd left the house so early!

Do what you feel comfortable with, my DD is 7 weeks old and she only had her first outing to the shops on Friday.

I would take her out...but I wouldn't put her in a baby capsule trolley - I would get DH to push the trolley and I would have baby in the pram or a sling (or vice versa) and that way it minimises her exposure to any germs!

You can't stay in the house for the next 8 weeks to immunisation time!

Congratulations as well on her arrival!!
