Would you look for it in a school bin?

Story I gave my son $10 for lunch today and I got him a lunch order for $5.40, so I was expecting $4.60 change, that sounds like nothing I KNOW but money has been a bit tight for me lately and I have been scrimping bit and pieces together.

Anyway I told my son to make sure he got the money and put it in the front of his bag. Of course when I asked him this afternoon, 'Oh, I think I threw it out', great. I was more annoyed at myself really, as I know he doesn't really understand the value of money yet and was likely to lose it.

Anyway I asked him what bin and they had just taken the bag out so I told the teacher I was going to look in there as he tossed some money out. She was fine with it but I feel pretty embarrassed about it now. I mean it was less than $5, it could have not bought much but its just a pain to lose it. I didn't find it by the way and the bin only had a few banana peels in it so nothing yuk but still.

Just one of those moments I think.....what were you thinking!?

I wouldn't go through a bin for $4.60, and probably wouldn't have spent money on a lunch order if I was THAT tight for money (when I could get a loaf of bread for $1).

I would have been looking for it too!!

Your boy needs to start to learn what money can buy!!

$4.60 can buy a pack of footy cards or it can nearly a happy meal.

Next time tell him how important it is to keep the change!!

How does the canteen give change back - ( I have always had correct money for lunch orders so not had to worry about getting change back??

T try as much as possible to set it up so things like this cannot happen. With Lunch orders I always either give correct money or at most need $1.00 or .50c change as yep it is easy to loose coins etc. I only give them a lunch order once a term and I have the price list hat home so it is not hard to have right money. On the one time I did get caught out and needed lunch order I went to the office at school and had them break a note so I could then give each order right money rather than risk loosing change

No time to get loaf of bread as I needed to be at school and was running late. There was ways around this of course, I could have gone to the shops and gone home, made lunch but I had to get the 3 yo to kindy and then go shopping and back home I went with the money option instead. Have had a talk to DS about the value of money and he knows that he needs to check and double check next time. I guess I just really hate loosing stuff but its not really a big deal.

I like them sweet.
Unless money is tight, I think it's crazy for you to go look for it in the bin. Again, like PP, I don't understand why you would let him buy lunch if money was that tight.

I think 6 is old enough to know the value of money to be careful with it.

I don't think I would have looked. Our school has a online order system, so I can pay online and don't have to worry though. I hope things get easier soon.
