When my 32 weeker (now 4 months actual age) cries or sneezes, he is very hoarse. I never noticed this for the 5 weeks he was in hospital but he never cried or sneezed then either.
Today I took him to the CHN and he got a little upset when we first got there. (When he does a whingy cry he does like a fake cough if you can imagine it.)The CHN asked me how long he had had that croup for? I told her that he didn't have croup, he was always like that when he cried and he also had a very strange and hoarse sounding sneeze. She then asked me if I had mentioned it to the paeds because she thought it was somewhat important/serious. I told he I did mention it once but no one seemed bothered. (They didn't hear it either though.) Anyway, I was wondering if anyone out there knows why this is so or have experienced hoarse throat noises from their baby? He didn't need ventilation, only CPAP? Can CPAP damage the vocal cords? My middle child has been on and off the vent several times and he has no damage so until now I had never considered that CPAP could do damage when nothing actually goes down their throat. Thanks for your any info you can offer. |

Could be reflux. I thought my prem's vocal chords may have been damaged - turns out she was hoarse from severe reflux. Once she started on reflux meds the hoarseness went away.
Just a thought as reflux is very common in prems!!! |

I wouldn't think that CPAP could damage vocal chords as it does not got internal. I guess other invasive tests could though, maybe feeding tube or suctioning????
Ventilation certainly can do damage. |
