DD has had a cold for 10 days now. She has a terrible cough and a slight wheeze at times but is only coughing about once every hour at most. She has no fever, is perfectly happy, crawls around and plays, sleeps well stiill apart from 2 days last week, if it weren't for the cough you'd never know she was sick.
I've been prescribed Amoxycillin (sp?) for her but am a bit reluctant to give it to her. Has anyone got any experiences giving AB's to a young baby, especially in a parent is allergic to penicillin (DH is).

DS1 was on steriods, amoxycillin and ventolin at around 5 months for croup and double ear infections. I am allergic to penicillin and my father. I didnt hesitate to give him the medication as he was sick and in pain i wasnt going to hold it out on him just because i didnt 'like' it .

I would probably hold off for a few days personally. I always get a lingering cough after a cold and its rarely an infection.

Try a steamer at night.

I wouldn t give AB unless you are sure it's a bacteria that causes it otherwise it doesn t work. If she has no fever I would rather try some natural remedies and leave her immunity system to build up and fight the cold.

Why would the doctor perscribe them, it she did NOT need them? Just follow your doctors advice.

I would tend to listen to the advice of your medical professional, unless you have good cause to doubt them. What were the reasons they gave you for prescribing them (I assume you asked)? Did you tell them about the history of allergies to penicillian when they were prescribing the AB? Infants respiratory systems can become compromised by an infection in the blink of an eye. She can't tell you how she is feeling yet.

Please get back in contact with the medical practitioner who assessed your baby and prescribed the medication, that is the person you need to talk to and discuss your reservations.

Or, as another option, you could get a second opinion from another doctor.

If you are unsure go to another doc as soon as you can. If you do give the antibiotics and you are worried about a reaction give it during the day and maybe give it when you can be near by the hospital just as a precaution
