A cheerful moment in a sad thread!

Lady-android do you honestly think people vote (in a secret ballot) because it is 'trendy'? That is the oddest thing I think I have ever read

Of course that must be the only reason people vote for Greens. How could it be possible that anyone in the world has a different opinion on policies than those held by Lady-android? It must be just for the cool factor - yep that's it.

What fresh hell is this?
OK, I'll admit it, my mum told me she'd disown me if I ever voted Liberal, so I voted Labor ph34r.gif

No in all seriousness, I was politically aware before I was old enough to vote and at that time 20+ years ago, the Labor Party, which coincidentally is the party my family voted for, seemed the best fit for my politics. I have grown increasingly distant from their politics as expressed today, and found that the Greens, as much as any party in Australia is able to, best represented my political views.

I will say that it is only the Aust Greens. It will be a cold day in hell before I ever vote for the Irish Greens, for example. Or the Irish Labor Party for that matter. Or the UK Labour Party.

I've certainly never met someone who admitted voting a certain way because it was "kool" Apart from anything else, I would think as a strategy it'd be doomed to failure if the person you were trying to impress had even a passing interest in politics, ANY politics, as they'd soon unmask your ignorance.

I don't necessarily agree with his politics, but he was certainly earnest in his beliefs.... and like others here I was surprised to hear he was 67.

Then I think thats more a reflection on who you associate with... its probably more likely that you associate with people who make a more considered political decision.

Over the years I have had those I know make the following comments
** "I'm going to vote green because green is good right?"
** "I'm just tired of Labor/Liberal so I'll vote anyone else"
** "My vote doesn't count anyway, so it doesn't matter"
** "Please... just tell me who to vote for because I don't understand."
** "Who did you vote for? I'll vote the same because you know more."
** A gay friend who was quite progressive mentioned who they voted for at a state election... I asked if he was serious because the candidate was a neo-nazi... my friend didn't realise that because he just wanted someone other than labour/liberal and didn't care who it was. He was horrified he'd voted that way.
** "I voted Labor because I don't like John Howards eyebrows"
** "My dad voted Labor, his dad voted Labor so I'll vote Labor"
** "I'm in the union, so I vote Labor"
** Or... there is my Ex who has never enrolled to vote and is completely disengaged. Why vote if you don't care?

People vote for really stupid reasons... and too few people actually look at the policies of the candidates. I mean just look here on EB... some people wont vote Labor because they don't like the sound of Julias voice. Some people wont vote Liberal because they don't like the idea of Tony Abbott in speedos. None of that has to do with policy, or how they want to see our country develop.

Train your dog, it's worth it!
Hmm. I see a gap in the political spectrum. I'm going to start up an Cool Party, full of ultra cool musos doing the metal underground thing. Mainstream not acceptable, except on application. That would sooooo improve parliamentary Q time - twenty questions on Cathedral's best ever. Bathory's use of the classics, and perhaps bass guitars at 20 paces.

FWIW, my political educmacation was from my folks, and went "vote labor or else". A few years of working, I went with the "else". I realised I'm a lot more conservative and small L liberal than they are - which is why I'm happy to be critical of both Labor and the current LNP arrangement, who are not liberal in the sense that I require a liberal party to be. At least, not at the moment. I live in hope.

I wish Bob all the best in his retirement, he's made so many fantastic contributions to Australia, and has had a positive impact on outcomes for so many people that I know. May the hiking trails be kind to you, sir.

With Bob gone, this will be the end of the Greens. No-one likes Christine Milne, and Sarah HansonYoung has less intelligence than ladyandroid and jenmummy put together.

And I will stop calling labor voters dumb when there isn't a direct correlation between feral bogan areas and labor worship.

LOL. Because I think you really believe what you wrote.

Was it you or someone else who also said trendy Newtown inner city types only vote for The Greens.

Commie? Someone actually used commie as a pejorative.

Did I go to sleep and wake up in 1953?

My family were labour voters and the electorate I lived in when I went to high school the state politician was a lovely man who advocated very well for our electorate and was a respectable man from what I saw. My first two state elections I voted labour because of the candidate. I have not voted labour for a while now.

I have worked in mining my entire career but I still see that the balance of power parties do play an important role in advocating for different agendas to what the popular consensus maybe.

I think given we live in a democracy there is a whole range of reasons as to why people vote for who they vote for... I think the media plays a role but I find the media in Australia is actual fairly biased as a rule against labour and the minor parties... Some votes are based on some fairly uneducated positions but I don't think that this gives any party any great advantage. Because we have compulsory voting everyone votes regardless of their interest level...
